How the Snorkel works

Hi,

First, ink flows via capillary through the snorkel tube aided by the ebonite stem that runs through it to a slit in the tip of the snorkel tube. Ink gets taken from here to the nib via a slit in the feed that feeds the nib. Air exchange is accomplished through the tip of the snorkel tube, not through the nib. The ink is kept inside of the sac of the pen by surface tension in the snorkel tube.

I will draw diagrams and elaborate on this later.

And, finally, I am the person who restores Snorkels without the book by Mr. Dubiel. I didn't have a chance to get it. I took my Snorkel apart (without breaking anything), uncrimped the cracked! sac guard, tossed it out, and just sent payment to Mr. Binder for a new protector. Right now the pen is back together, sacless, for the moment, and sac guardless--the parts are coming in, but how the pen works is actually quite clear to me. Anyway, my Snorkel is black with a Needlepoint Silver-palladium triumph nib, and is a Statesman. :)

Hi,

Sure! If I can borrow my mom's camera. :)

Anyway, I went from no Sheaffers to a Reacktor, an Imperial, then 20+ cartridge pens, then yesterday, a Snorkel.

I fixed Snorkels but didn't have one until now. :P

Hi,

Ok, Ok, I confess...I tested the nib by connecting a Sailor cartridge on the sac connector.

I just had to...

Ok, smooth, stiff, very fine line, wet, and smooth on both sides.

Tip:

To get nice-sized ink droplets from your snork, simply shake lighly above your droplet destination. In no time flat you'll have some pretty globules in place! (note to SELF, don't try inducing flow by jostling pen up and down!!!)

This is not a pen to drop as it leaks, from the snorkel tube, more easily than any other pen I've experienced yet.

So much ink, so little said...

Hi,

Pretty much expected because of the way the snorkel tube is designed.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
