As the Mastercard advertisement says "Priceless"

For a Bombay boy like me, it brings back fond memories. The next time I am in Mumbai I know which shops to visit.

Thank you,

Carlos

I really miss India sometimes...

(lots).

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of nothing at all...

Awesome! Photo-journalism at its best in my book. The feel of the place really shone through in your article. Well done. A great read.

Are fountain pens still in such demand in India? Who uses them? You've probably got more specialist pen shops there than we've got in the whole of Britain. Amazing.

Dean

Thank you so much for this thread! Your pictures are great and make me want to go to Mumbai really badly (I mean I already considered it a very interesting city before but now I want to see it even more) ! I'm especially envious because you can still buy all the old Sheaffers in some of your shops.

That was fascinating. Methinks that Indians still have an appreciation of classic writing implements, much more so than Americans and even Europeans. I was amazed to see that there are so many stores in Mumbai.

Actually like in rest of the world, here also FPs sell quite less than other modes. FPs are now coming back into vogue here slowly.

The market on Abdul Rehman Street houses major distributors/stockists and caters to the retailers from all over India, hence the large number of shops.

Best Regards,

Hari

WOW!

That's amazing!

I could spend days browsing those shops.

I've noticed that here in the U.S. you can't even find fountain pens in the drug stores or discount stores (Walmart, Kmart) anymore.

They started phasing them out about 4 or 5 years ago.

I guess they were taking up too much space on the display racks they could use for gell pens.

I think it's really a shame.

Hi,

Loved the info about the shops selling the fountain pens. I had a couple fo questions though i know its waaaaaay too late but i was interested in purchasing a Rotring 600 black knurled grip fountain pen, since i'm doing architecture and i'm smitten with pen. I wanted to know if any of those shops still sell the pen, or if i could get the pen anywhere. I cannot buy it online so the only way i can buy it is from a shop in mumbai. Will be awesome if u could help me with the the info.

Cheers.

Ameya, I have not seen those pens for quite some time during my regular visits to the market... Maybe you can try the Fort area shops if they have old stock, just ask them if they have any Rotring fountain pens. presently Rotring Esprits are easily available.

Best,

Hari

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
