Hello everyone. I've been lurking for a while, so its time to introduce myself.

I'm Steve. I currently own one Sheaffer but have asked for a Waterman Phileas for Christmas, which I think I see under the tree, and I just ordered a Rotring 600 silver off the internet.

I live outside St. Loius, which is pretty cold right now.

Yes, I do have 8 children, but this is about to change. Here's the story.

We had 4 children the good old fashion way. Then in 1996, we adopted a 10 month old infant from Athens, Greece. In 1998, we adopted a boy and 2 girls (brother and sisters) from Columbia in South America. This makes 8.

Early next year, we are adopting a little girl from Haiti.

Don't panic as not all of them are home. We currently only have 4 children in our home. Of the other 4, one is in grad school at Purdue, one is in college, one is living in Amarillo, and our third biological child passed away in 1996 at the age of 8.

So, now you know. I'm been learning a lot about FPs and look forward to learning more. I'm glad I found this place. I thought I was the only one who enjoyed FPs and writing.

Dadof8, aka Steve

Welcome, Steve...Both to FPN and the little St. Louis area pen group (if you haven't already been attending.)

I'll be looking forward to knowing what you think of the Rotring 600 when you get it.

Best, Ann

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Ann, I wasn't aware of a pen group in the St. Louis area. I would be interested in finding out when and where you meet.

Also, where are the pen stores in the St. Louis area?

Thanks,

Steve

Welcome to the dollhouse! It starts with one pen...but it quickly goes downhill from there.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your child. From the way you and your wife have opened your home to other children though, it's obvious there's a lot of love in your family.

Welcome Steve!! I have been starting to collect as well. Like others,it hits the pocket book at first as we try to narrow down our likes and dislikes.

Have fun!!

Hi Steve and welcome to FPN! :D

Thank you for sharing a bit of background about your family in your intro (yes, I was wondering about the "father of 8" part!). I think it is wonderful how you all opened your hearts to your new family members :)

Sooooo....did you get a Waterman Phileas after all? I myself recently got a new black matte Rotring 600 in a closeout sale online a few weeks ago (just $25!)and am very pleased with the way mine writes. Don't be put off by the cap---just push and it will stay on securely---if you decide to post it (a fancy way of saying "cap it") while writing.

As for your question about pen stores and the pen club in St. Louis, sorry I don't know the answers myself but maybe someone else does.....

Hello Steve and welcome aboard the FPN! :D My father use to live in St. Louis and was always a big fan on the Cardinals, and went to the 1928 World Series and caught a foul ball that was hit by Babe Ruth and later got it autographed by the Bambino himself after the game was over. Sadly, many years later, someone he knew stole the ball from his collection.

I am sure that you will enjoy it here very much!

Happy New Year!

Sincerely yours,

Maja,

I did get the Phileas :) , but it was a M nib :( so DW let me take it back and I have a F nibbed Phileas on order. It should be here is a couple of days.

I also ordered a Rotring 600 in silver from an eBay bid I won. It's coming from France, so who knows how long it will take it to get here this time of year.

I'm just writing away with my old Scheaffer school pen. It was cheap when I was in the 5th grade about 37 years ago, but it works great.

Mannenhitsu,

We do love our Cardinals here. Sorry to hear about your dad's baseball. What a treasure you would have on your hands if you still had it.

Just a guess but...."DW" = Darling Wife?

I have a Phileas with a M nib and yes, they do write quite broadly for M nibs! Still, nice if you want to sign your name in style!

As for the Rotring, I think you will like using it. I was worried about the weight when I used it for the very first time, but it is a very durable pen with a very good nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
