Sheafer Snorkel

Hi,

I have Snorkel that takes ink in just fine I O-ring and point seal repkaced), but no ink gets to the nib, so the pen doesn't write.

Looking closely at the mechanism, HOW does the ink get back to the nib and feed ? Everything seems to be sealed tight with no obvious path for thr ink in the sack to get back to the nib.

Thanks

Hi,

Make sure that the slit on the top of the snorkel tube is in alignment to the nib. The ink goes from the snorkel tube to the nib. :)

Hi Luigi,

Note another member mentioned a simular probem in the "repair Q&A" forum under "Snorkel -slow starter". I suggest you check also all suggestions there.

Your problem may be caused by several shortcomings such as :

1 - Proper radial alignment of the snorkel tube versus the section & nib. There is a small lengthwise slit at the portruding end of the snorkel tube which has to be radially aligned with the inkchannel of the feed & nib for proper ink transfer. Note the little slit in the retracted snorkel tube matches with a little transversal slit in the feed. This slit transfers the ink to the inkchannel of the feed, feeding the nib.

2- The inkchannel in the feed) and/or the transfert slit are somewhat clogged. To check this the Triumph nib has to be screwed off. You can open the ink channel in the feed by gently pulling a 0.1 mm shimm through the feed slit. Note the 0.1mm shimm should be max. 3 mm wide allowing entering & cleaning the transfertslit. To clean the transfert slit you logically have to dis-assemble the snorkel system so you can enter the snorkel pipe bore.

3-Partly clogged snorkel tube ink channel. Since you confirmed the touchdown filling works properly I expect also that the system pulls & expels the ink very well. In this case snorkel tube clogging is not the problem. One can open the ink channel of a (dis-assembled !) snorkel pipe by pushing/ pulling a 0.2 mm steel wire through the slot.

Wishing you succes,

Best regards from Belgium, Francis

Dennis and Francis,

Many thanks. I had all the problems both of you mentioned plus the fact that I mounted the tube backwards !

The pen is now working just fine.Luigi

Thanks for the update, Luigi. Sometimes it's a very simple thing that is necessary in order for a pen to work. For example (and I think I mentioned this earlier on FPN), I was wondering why my Waterman Expert II fountain pen started to skip all of a sudden. I shook and shook it...until I realized the convertor was out of ink

Maja... I actually had that same issue with a car I used to own. It sputtered and died on the way to work one day. So I had it towed to my mechanic who promptly told me, "Generally works better with gas in it....." Gotta love a New Jersey mechanic.

That's funny.

:D

I think I did that to the Core, the ink looked so faint, so I put it on the side to rest.

It had no ink in it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
