Are there pens modern pens out there that the nibs are like vintage?

I was curious if anyone knows of any modern pens that have the same flexi style of nib that a lot vintage pens have. Also, the vintage pens that have flex, does this come from decades of use, or where they like this out of the box?

I just have never seen or used a modern pen that has the same feel as a vintage one. I know you can get the nib modified, which I plan on doing here in the next few weeks. But do any pen makers do this out of the box, or am I one of the few that like Flex?

Based on how fast flex nib pens sell on here, and elsewhere and the fact that many nib tuners offer added flex as an option I'd say you aren't alone.

From what I've seen doing research the closest "modern" pen to have flex is the Pilot Custom pens with the FA nib, but from what I've read its not that vintage feel. The closest way to get modern pens to behave that way is with a custom nib from Richard Binder or others.

Vintage pens with flex would have been flexy then too. Its not the result of use/age.

I have never found a modern flex that measures up to vintage flex and I have never met a vintage flex that can hold a candle to some of the older flex dip pens. I believe flex pens come from the way they are tempered and cut, not from long usage. In fact I think if a nib changed over time, it would be due to metal fatigue and that would not be a good thing for the nib... or the owner of the pen.

Omas, Montegrappa, Sailor, Namiki and Pelikan pens have a very good amount of springiness and/or flex in my opinion. Nowadays many pen brands manufacture rigid and very void of character nibs. You have to testwrite as many penbrands as possible to get a precise idea of what is a modern flexible pen or not.

Short answer is no :ltcapd: as there does not seem to be a modern pen company interested in producing flexible nibs. There was an apocryphal story that the OMAS flexy pen that was made for Levenger had an large return rate because people couldn't write with it and sprung the nib.

So you might find some modern soft nibs but not true flexible nibs. I just got an Aiken from Rick Krantz that no modern nib I have written with holds a candle to.

You think that Sailor has flex?.. Gosh, which Sailor have you been using? I would not describe my Sapporo & 1911s as in the least bit flexible.

Nakaya and Danitrio flexi-nibs have quite a bit of flex, but compared to vintage nibs they are "semi-flex", from what I know about these things.

My Aurora Sole(bellissima!)has what I would consider semi-flex,but I'm not sure if the previous owner had the nib fixed by Richard or not.

I testwrote a King of Pen which was fitted with a Naginata Togi nib which was the best japanese nib I ever wrote with. Its nib was and is way superior to Namiki's Emperor nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
