News from Ebay

I am new to this forum and I am also new as a Wahl collector. I observed that here, in the Wahl section there was only ONE new post during the weekend.

With all the due respect for the other participants, I'll bring to your attention something that may animate the atmosphere.

Look at this Ebay listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4.cBID.m312.lVI

The guy is asking for 900 bucks. I considered this a joke and I offered him $60 and when he answered with a 700 counteroffer I gave up.

This may be a starting point for your comments, for which I thank you very much.

Not sure how much it's worth but $60 certainly sounds too low.

Well, I opened with 60 to start a conversation. But his "700 bucks" reply left me speachless...

I don't think it's worth much more than 60. If I were selling it you could definitely get it for under 100.

If the color really is superb, with pen and pencil (and box) with restoration I'd pin it retail at $120-150 range. If color were poor, it would probably be parts value only. Always room for different views of the market.

I think it's a beautiful little set, especially in its box: I'd pay that much ($120) for it, David, if I weren't in a spouse-imposed pen spending freeze!

I've seen few eBay auctions that passed without bid because the seller had too high a starting price, even though they might have achieved that much if they had of made it fun for the "punters".

I just hope the inflated price has nothing to do with what the seller paid for the item in the first place!

Darren.

I think you can compare the pen to the pencil and see there is uniform discoloration on the pen. Plus, I think I can see a band of discoloration across the middle of the cap.

Here's an enlargement of the cap. No discoloration? Look at my thread titled more wahl pics for some perfect jade.

I don't know much about this pen, but I think that the "1938 WAHL EVERSHARP GREY/PEARL" description is far from reality. I guess that it is a '50-'60 pen, made by the Parker-Eversharp Co., but I'm not sure and I'm asking for other opinions.

And what about the price?

I have a few of these. They were never made for the US market and I think they were made by Evershapr before the parker takeover, but as you say later than 38. I don't know what it will go for but I'm not surprised to see it pretty high since many have never seen one.

Is the transparency genuine or aquired due to the degradation of the plastic? I am curious because the price went pretty high at this auction, much higher than I wanted to bid.

It appears indeed to have Toxic Tushy Syndrome, not uncommon on Dorics, which also get Toxic Keppe Syndrome. Toxic Tushy syndrome precedes "ain't got no more tushy" syndrome in such pens.

Pretty pen set in nifty color, but seems high to me if indeed has Toxic Tushy syndrome. If just a trick of the light, then i retract my objection.

Please explain both syndromes--are we talking about the cap and butt end of the pen(duh? )

Crazing. Translucency. Eventually abject discombulation. Browns n' Greens at Wahl seem particularly susceptible. Often seems to occur at the ends. Inner cap effects? Stress on the plastic?

Amazing how long a pen with with both Toxic Tushy and Toxic Keppe can carry on without finally giving in to Toxic Kishkes!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
