From their website...

"We regret to announce that Baltimore Pen Limited, trading as Bertram's Inkwell, in downtown Baltimore will be closing its doors on March 31, 2008 after 15 years in business. Thank you to all our customers and friends who have supported us over the years. Bertram's Inkwell will remain open at its location in white Flint Mall in Rockville, Maryland. Bertramsinkwell.com will continue to be online providing our large selection of pens, refills and accessories."

At least the B&M location in Rockville is staying open, as well as the web business.

But you can't close. I haven't been there yet? Sadness.

that truely sucks

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Another one bites the dust. That's unfortunate.

Lisa, are there any B&M penshops left in North Carolina?

That is a shame. It's one of the few pen shops I've visited overseas and one I enjoyed spending time in. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. On the bright side, their other branch will remain.

The ONE pen store that is close to me!!!! :crybaby: Thank you so much for posting this, though; I would have been even more brokenhearted if I'd driven there only to find it closed. Sigh. This really bites. Those guys are wonderful and they carry just about every ink and refill I use. Better plan a few trips in the meantime. :(

Oh no! The source of my largest temptation over the last 3 years is gone. I used to live three blocks away, and visit there often. I bought a LOT of stuff from there considering I was a starving grad student.

I have never been there but just the thought sucks. The one near me seems to be doing OK last time I was in there. You do pay for the location but it's always nice to go in and just look and talk to two guys who love what they do.

As far as I know, CharlieB, there are no dedicated B&M penshops here. We have several locations of Sharon Luggage, which has a pen counter, but the selection is pretty basic; if you want anything besides a Lamy Safari or a Cross ATX, you might be out of luck. The one near me does carry some bottled Private Reserve ink, and I used to pop in every so often to get Pen World and/or Stylus, but lately, they haven't even had that. Thank goodness for the Internet! (And the Raleigh Pen Show!)

WhosYerBob,

Sorry that my sharing that tidbit would result in your thread being booted into the doldrums.

According to the website "Bertram's Inkwell will remain open at its location in white Flint Mall in Rockville, Maryland"

So it is still keeping a shop in the area... albeit a bit closer to DC

Really really sad to hear this news. I was in there last August. I stumbled upon the store by accident. I was mostly amused at the idea of a pen shop at the base of one of my favorite wacky buildings in Baltimore. One of the nice gentlemen there helped me pick out a Retro 51 Tornado that I love. I was just thinking how much I preferred that place to the feel of Fahrney's in DC.

At least they won't completely disappear and I did get to visit that one time. But still... it won't be the same.

(Oh, hi, *waves* new person wandering through, don't mind me.)

Wow, I drove right past White Flint Mall in Rockville earlier in the week. I wish I'd known it was there so I could have stopped by.

As a frequent and very satisfied customer, the saddest part of this is there are some people here who are extremely knowledgeable and client oriented who will no longer be plying their trade for the benefit of us pen buyers/collectors/users, etc. They have a great space there to browse and try pens. Hard to think it will be gone next week.

By the way, you don't have to go to the Baltimore store to get a pen at 50% off. Call them and they will ship it.

Is the inventory listed anywhere online? I couldn't find anything on their site about even the 50% off clearance sale. I would feel like a vulture calling them to ask what's left. I shouldn't feel like that, but for some reason I think I would.

Once they close their doors, I wonder whether they will transfer their inventory to their other store or if they will sell it online.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
