Wondering how old these nibs might be.

Nearly a month ago, I went to the local flea-market looking for watches and pens and such-related items of interest.

While I was at said-market, I found a rather rusty tin box with a sticker on it which proudly proclaimed:

"$15 FOR THE LOT"

The lot of what?, I thought. I opened the box and it was overflowing (Literally, I almost couldn't get the box shut again! ) with steel dip-pen nibs.

The nibs were of varying levels of rustiness and usefulness and seemed to be a really mixed bag. Anyway, I bought this box and toddled off home. I tipped the entire nibby mess out onto my desk and started picking through them. By the time I had done, I had at a rough guess - counted about 150 nibs. Of these, about 80 or 90 were nice and clean or had a minimal amount of rust. I set these aside to write with.

These nibs were a bit of challenge at first, but now I've gotten the swing of things and they're really quite fun. They're nice and flexible, too. I took out a magnifier and had a look at the nib-shafts, they were engraved with:

M MYERS & SON (something after, indiscernible).

3141

BRIMINGHAM

And then on the right, going down, after all that: ENGLAND.

How old might these nibs be? Some of them were just rusty scrap, but others (the 80-90 which I mentioned) looked brand-new.

EDIT: Photos of these nibs will come when I find the camera, which has gone AWOL...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
