My People!

Recommended Posts

I found this place a coupla days ago via a google search for the Visconti Travelling Ink Pot, and I have to say after a preliminary look-around, what a relief not to have these conversations with myself (about ink, ink color, permanence, nib variations, ink flow, adjustments, paper, paper grain, bleed, feathering, letting others use your fountain pen or preventing them from using your fountain pen (!)). All this time... people like me... you all were here.

How cool is that?

Way.

Hi. My name is Lisa, and I'm a pen nut aficionado.

Yay and may I make so bold as to posit a tentative Woo!

Welcome. Please prepare to divest yourself of any remnants of what you may have previously considered normality.

By the way, loving the username...

Welcome to the tribe, Lisa!

I've found that FPN can be as addictive as fountain pens themselves. Careful, because it's been known to feed our addictions. When I first joined FPN less than a year ago, I had two bottles of ink and five fountain pens, all of which were under $100. Now I have over twenty bottles of ink, an ink mixing kit, and, well, all of my pens are under the $1000 mark. So I'm doing OK, right?

Yes, this is better than having conversations with yourself. That's a sign of mental instability, and we are all mental stable. After all, there's nothing wrong with obsessing about a 19th-century technology using bits of metal, rubber and (later) coloured plastic, and unstable fluid mixtures of varying colours, and having an entire message boards devoted to those arcana. Right?

Welcome from Western Canada to the Fountain Pen Nuthouse.

Sometimes a technology reaches perfection and further development is just tinkering. The fountain pen is a good example of this.

It does feel as though you all have been hiding! Ha ha ha!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I am not a number -- Normal's a dynamic concept. Isn't that a relief?

Splicer -- Your ink comparisons are a real public service! I've been reading your blog, too, and I think... do you have a scale to weigh your nibs? Because, really... (see comment to I am not a number).

Everything right, Mac, far as I'm concerned.

Hurrah!

Ehh, I'm just the latest in a long line of ink fanatics scanning comparisons. I wasn't the first, won't be the last, and am not the most prolific either. I appreciate the nod, but a lot of other people deserve it too. It may be community service, but it's a community effort, too.

And um... yes, I have a scale. I weigh my pens using a food scale that has gone a little wonky lately, which has put a crimp in my pen reviewing. Some time ago I thought it would be a good idea for me to weigh and measure my food. It's probably still a a good idea, but I only ever weigh pens (and occasionally letters) any more.

I told some people at work that I spend time on a forum devoted to Black Hard Rubber. They now think that my life is slightly more glamorous than the actuality of existence as a born-again civilian. The good side is that I have been offered a podium dancing spot on Thursdays at a new fetish club in Bristol, the bad side is that my Security Clearance has been revoked at work.

Swings and roundabouts.

"I thought it would be a good idea for me to weigh and measure my food." - Splicer

I'll bet there's a WeighandMeasureMyFoodNetwork.com.

Anyway, splicer, quit trying to wave away my praise. Just cos a buncha other folks I never heard of did something I haven't seen doesn't mean you're not providing a public service. (I'd insert an emoticon, but those buggers scare me, rolling around and pounding things. They need tiny little valium.) (My jocular tone is coming through, though, right?)

HILARIOUS! One time, I returned from a weekend in New York with the tale that I had made $800 as an impromptu substitute dominatrix at the Black Tie Club in Astoria, and then the VP of Operations thought I was a whore!

Oh wait, that's not quite the same thing as your story, is it?

*He said, "Um... that sounds an awful lot like prostitution." I said, "Well, what would you be doing right now if you weren't getting paid?" He said, "You have a point." Anyway, I was kidding about that whole dominatrix thing and was slightly impressed that I was able to make up details -- "Black Tie Club!" -- so quickly and had mixed feelings about being believed so easily.

BTW, I am not a number, I am two days older than you. (I need an emoticon that shrugs. you know, that "whatever that means" gesture. It's like, "Hey! You're in England! Do you know Stephen and Katie?!")

Welcome, Lisa! I was born and raised in CA and was not even aware of a place called South City! This is why this place is, as you say, "way" cool! I learn something new everyday. Enjoy your time on the boards... Be mindful though that pen-related discussions and the veneer of "etiquette" around them often hangs by a thread. Example: IANAN offering up the visual of his Thursday podium dancing at a fetish club, in reference to black hard rubber.

Hint: it's where our airport is.

Ahh... Northerners... ;) I should have been more specific... I'm from the Southern part. I think we can agree that SoCal and NoCal might as well be a different states, yea?

Welcome, Lisa. You've already brought out the best in us. Or at least our fetishes... :ninja: Welcome to the asylum.

I may have to start a blog just to satisfy my fantasies of IANAN's black rubber... :bunny01:

I have the opposite problem. Every time (once every week or so around these parts) I see a thread named "Dating a Parker" and am tempted to earnestly reply that it helps to ask Miss Parker for her phone number.

Hi and welcome, whilst this site may encourage you to buy more pens, you will probably become more discerning, so in theory your pens will be better buys. Not a good place to come if you have a habit you want to break, but at least you don't have to 'talk' to yourself any more.

Welcome Lisa!

It's always nice to see another nut...um...aficionado. I'm relatively new here, but it's a great group of people. Just don't delve too far into the forums, you'll never get out.

Ah, what have we here? A newbie? Turn around, Newbie, turn around now, while you have the chance. You’ll thank me, you will. Yes, I know, you think you’ve come home, don’t you? That we all speak your language, that watching a line go down wet and turn from shiny to dry is no less sensual than most of one’s lovers. Well stay if you must—and a hearty welcome if you do—but here’s a warning. It won’t be long until you need another pen, although there are a half dozen or more perfectly good ones in the drawer there by your knee. You’ll wind up like the rest of us, searching for that one true shade, that perfect blue, black, or blood red that speaks to your soul. And your addiction—yes, addiction!—will slowly morph from the accoutrements you love to this forum that you’ll keep revisiting, full of helpful people you'll like. Pen porn! Welcome, but be warned….

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
