Refil for an irregular ball-point

Red October

Recommended Posts

So in a large bag of vintage writing tools I picked up (mostly old advertising automatic pencils, of which only one was suitable for use) was an instrument that caught my eye: a particularly long ball point pen. It has no pocket clip and has a retractable tip. It's rather basic, but the interesting part comes from the label on the side: "BELL SYSTEM PROPERTY 3015RTL" I tried to use it and it wouldn't write. The old highschool trick of holding the tip in my cigarette lighter brought some life from the pen; it now writes about 95% of the time. I want to find a refill for it, but the one in it is very long. The refill in it is labeled as follows:

Waterbury #1015RT-L

(Kineto-ink) Reproducing

FINE

To the left of a band on the refill the letters DJG are printed. The Refill is old enough to be made of metal (looks like brass).

I know what reporoducing ink is but I have no idea what Kineto-ink is. I also like fine points (the finer the better!) so I'd like to stick with the fine refill. My local office supply store couldn't help me. Can refills be obtained for this pen, or was it deliberately an odd type, to limit the utility of the pen to anyone who swiped it from the Telephone Man?

It looks like you can replace this with Fisher or Foray universal refills that you can cut the length. Foray refills are available at Office Depot. I don't know where to get Fisher refills, as I got mine from a local stationery shop.

Great. I'll try office depot. Office Max didn't have anythign long enough.

The Fisher refill I got was called the "One-For-All" refill, item no. S1F. Good luck.

Great! So what's "Kineto-ink"? Just a brand name, or something special that the Telco would have had a use for? Or just whatever someone stuck in the pen because it fit?

Never heard of that brand. It might be the original refill it came with, but is no longer made.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
