New from Chicago

My name is Paul Carter and I have been a pen collector for about four years but have used fountain pens, off and on, all my life. I think my habit began when I was keeping a daily journal during my teens and preferrred to write with something more interesting than a Bic. I prefer Moderns but continue to read about and play with vintage, too. Am hoping that the FPN is a kindler, gentler experience than the other site I visit daily.

Hi Paul and welcome to FPN! :D

Nice to have you on board. Well, I am not 100% sure which site you mean ;) but FPN is a very friendly, helpful site with lots of info and advice, so I hope you enjoy it.

Oh, what type of pens do you have in your collection?

Cheers,

~Maja

Hello Paul,

Have no fear. FPN is the most friendly and fair board in pendome, so it's a given that it will be better that the other site that you visit daily. :P A rather parochial attitude, I'll grant, but truth is truth! :D That said, it a rare FPNer that doesn't visit other boards and lists. It broadens our horizons. :)

It's a good mix here; the moderns are probably the most vocal, but there's plenty of sentiment toward the vintage side of the interest, too. I'd bet that there's quite a bunch of 'bipenials' also. You know, those who write both ways! :o

Welcome to the nuthouse.

Howdy Paul and welcome to the FPN: the friendliest pen place on the Web! :D I love Chicago and its many wonderful places to eat great food or just enjoy. Likewise, I am very happy the White Sox won the World Series, as it was a LONG TIME coming!

What kind of modern pens do you like collect and use? Myself, I am partial to Aurora and Pelikan. Both manufacturers produce some very nice products that perform very well.

Sincerely yours,

Welcome to FPN, Paul. I've just come back from a four-day visit to Chicago. What a fantastic city! And what an excellent pen shop you have in Gilbertson Clybourn. (Levenger in the Marshall Field's on State Street was very good, too.)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
