Parker 45 Flighter

Recommended Posts

I just got my Parker 45 and really like it. I was looking for an everyday pen that woiuld be a workhorse, and wouldn't be so expensive that I would worry about where it is every minute.... I think I found it. Initially I was planning to get a gold nib to replace the steel nib that came with it, but I am quite pleased with the Steel nib's performance as it is so I probably won't do that for now.

Looking at the attached pic of the pen and the writing sample, the line that the medium nib lays down sure looks a bit too broad for everyday use. I'm looking forward to buying one with a fine nib and I hope that that line is finer than the medium . Anyone knows how fine the Parker 45 fine nib writes compared to say, a Lamy Safari fine nib.

The 45 was my first fountain pen. I tested the medium and fine. The medium nib does lay a v broad line and it is butter smooth. The fine is quite scratchy. I can't recall the size of the fine, however.

Using now: Pelikan M400 Green, Sailor 1911s, Parker 51, Pelikan M200

I have a relatively recent (last 5 years) Parker 45 with metal body with gold trim and plated medium steel nib. When I first used it it was quite scratchy and I didn't like it very much. I didn't use it for a while, then picked it up again and after a period of use it seems to have bedded in and is now a very nice writer.

Haven't got much to compare it against in the price range but it seems quite good value to me.

I also had a superficially identical pen around 25 years ago as a student, and I recall it being a good writer then - I used it for all of my exams. Unfortunately I broke the section at the barrel threads making it useless. Not sure what happened to it - I guess at the time it ended up in the bin. This is what inspired me to pick a new one up a few years back when I was moving back into using fountain pens more regularly.

My Parker 45 with a fine nib arrived a few days back. Its a classic as far as the looks go, but the new Parkers havent lived up to my expectations when it comes to writing. The 45 seems to be little different than a Vector. It has a very narrow sweet spot. I hope it will mature with lots of writing, that is if I do use it at all. The Pilot Prera, Lamy Safari and the Pelikanos write much better than this one. When will my serach for THE pen finally end ?

Old 45s with gold nibs are GREAT. I love my 51s and 61s but the old 45s rock too!!! Get a GOOD nib though - I have several steel ones that are super, too. A great pen for the money!!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
