Seeking help finding the perfect pen

Thanks for all the advice. I couldn't have navigated this complex world of fountain pens without all the help.

I just placed my orders. I've ordered both the Waterman Expert Dune Red GT (Med) and the Waterman Ici Et La Lilac (Fine) from Penwa.com (only $139 for both pens!) along with 2 packages of black cartredges, an ink converter, a bottle of black ink, and a package of purple cartredges just for fun. That should let her decide what she likes best. All the ink if Waterman and we'll investigate other inks based on how this works out.

Additionally, I decided to buy a personalized double pen case from Cross. (Cross Double Leather Pen Pouch ) I'm having her initials imprinted in gold. I saw lots of other nice cases and pouches but the cross seemed the nicest to me with softer leather that looked more fitting a fountain pen than the harder leather cases that look like a something you'd put a pocket knife in.

All that plus 2nd day shipping and I'm paying $230 for the lot. So I think I made out pretty good. I wish the case was cheaper but the only the Cross shipping leaves me feeling burned ($12!).

If she falls in love with Fountain pens I think she'll at least be off to a good start. And if not, at least she'll have a really beautiful set of pens to be proud of for years and years to come. Well worth the money in either case I think.

Thanks again to everyone who gave advice and suggestions. Many of the pens suggested are amazing and probly where we'd head next time around if she decides to stick with it. I'll post reviews of the pens from a newbies perspective when they arrive.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
