Between 146 and 144

Hi all, planning to get either a 146 or 144. Need to consult you guys for opinion :)

1. Is it true that all 146 must have a 'screw-on' cap and not a 'snap-on' cap? I was offered a 146 'snap-on' cap. Wondering whether it's a fake?

2. What makes most people go for a 146 rather than a 144, and vice versa?

Thanks for all for opinion. Appreciate it much!

Blessed Christmas and a joyful new year ahead

1. Yes, certainly the black resin ones. If you're talking about precious metals models, though, I believe it's not so clear cut. But for plain black resin, they're all screw caps.

2. Size. The 146 is bigger than average, the 144 significantly smaller. Plus the 146 is a piston filler only, the 144 a cartridge filler only.

Thanks Ray for the excellent tips. The seller told me that the pen measures 6" capped. Posted length not mentioned. Personally would you prefer piston mechanism or cartridge mechanism more? TQ :happyberet:

The 144 would be just a tad too small for me to use as my standard everyday writer, and I am a woman with thin but long fingers. So unless you have exceptionally small hands, I would recommend 146 for that reason alone. Also, if you use the 144 on a regular basis, prepare to frequently replace cartridges or refill mini-converters.

Have you considered the 145 "Chopin" model? It has a standard size converter/cartridge system.

Thanks QM for the kind suggestion. Yes i've thought of acquiring a 145. Might be a better option for an 'asian' hand like me :ltcapd:

But i thought the mini-converters would do fine for daily usage? One full refill could easily last me for about 2 days, on normal days i mean.

I can second this.

I have a 144 and don't like it because it is very slim. Don't have any 146 to compare with but my daily writers are Pelikan 400s. Not the biggest pens, too, but significantly thicker than the 144.

Go with the 146. It's much better made, and a much more solid pen.

The 144 has a reputation for being rather fragile, even for a Montblanc. Indeed I've seen more broken 144 pens than any other model made by Montblanc. I have a 146, have owned a 149, and own or have owned several other models of MB, but will never own another 144.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
