I'll try and arrange one of my regular Northern excursions for one of those dates so that I can pop in in passing. Do you have a venue yet?

The venue is the George Hotel in Lichfield, Staffordshire (my home town!). The venue is about 10 minutes from the M6 Toll Road junction. Lichfield is also well served by good train and national coach links with both the train and coach stations being about 5 minutes walk away from the George. There are loads of restaurants, pubs, bistros and cafes literally a couple of steps from the hotel (as well as good facilities in the hotel). For culture vultures Dr Johnson's birthplace museum, Erasmus Darwin's house and Lichfield Cathedral are again within 5 minutes walk of the venue. It really is an ideal location for a weekend show.

I shall pack my passport, phrasebook and bring copious amounts of weak shandy on account of my being a southerner.

I'm working on the show website, should have it up in a couple of weeks. It will be packed full of information! We haven't started selling trading tables yet but we already have quite a few booked so things are looking good.

It's a fantastic site, Ian!

The weekend sounds wonderful and I am very excited about attending!

Fantastic website - I didn't even know they did exhibitions like this - I'm entering a whole new world here!!

I would love to do the calligraphy workshop but I'm not going to be able to book anything until closer to the time due to other commitments - do you think it is going to be too late then? (Or indeed if it is too late already?).

I'm going to have a look in my diary and see if I can get it sorted out!

That's not really ooop norf that's just a suburb of Brum these days. No need to pack the flat cap or borrow Whippet  Doing some practice on your Eckie Thump technique could be a good idea though, thems can get a bit rough once they gets a scent of the Quink in their nostrils! :yikes:

Might have a talk with you about a bit of car share if you like - too far out to confirm that I will be going, it is in the BOATING season  So I could be oft into the wide blue yonder, the Mem Sahib has mumbled summat about going on our hols about then :bonk:

Now we've got the Northern Pen Show out of the way can we get started on the countdown for the Midland Show :) Will have to check my diary, think I can only make one day that weekend as I've a feeling it clashes with Lurcher tripod racing.

I'll say it very quietly so that Ian doesn't yell at me - I've never been to Lichfield. Is anyone planning to attend one of the workshops?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
