Hello Gurus,

I am new to your world of fountain pens. I am planning to buy a Mont Blanc for my grandfather. He loves Mont Blanc. Could you please help me choose between

1. Montblanc Starwalker Doue Platinum-Plated Fountain Pen

2. Montblanc Meisterstuck Le Grand Fountain Pen 146

Which do you think is best?

I am also considering Montblanc Meisterstuck Le Grand Fountain Pen 149

I don't know much about either pen, but I read that the Starwalker is cartridge only. I think that's a definite knock against getting that pen. I'm sure your grandfather would like to have different options when it comes to filling up his fountain pen. It does look awfully nice, though.

There are some good reviews in the fountain review forum that you should definitely check out, to help you make your decision.

2 (and the 149) seem a lot more "grandfatherly" to me. ;)

Besides: do you know that #1 is a cartridge filler?

Thanks Dave, for your reply. And OMG I did not know that #1 is a cartridge filler.

If it is for your grandfather and he likes MBs, I would assume that he wants a more traditional one. Therefore I would say the 146 or the 149, as daveq mentioned. Anyways, some people around the FPN have said that the nib on the Starwalker is different than the nib type that MB is known for making, and they don't like it.

Just my thoughts...

Montblanc 145, F nib
Faber Castell E-Motion in Pearwood, F nib
Montblanc 149, F nib
Visconti Divina Proporzione 1618, S nib
Montblanc Cool Blue Starwalker, EF nib
Montblanc Solitaire Silver Barley BP
Montblanc Rouge et Noir Coral, M nib

I second the 146 over the 149 if he is going to carry it and use it regularly. The 149 has a huge nib and is so big around that it would not be a comfortable writer for me.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
