Help with identifying and valuation

I was given about 10 years ago a set of MB pens in a case.

These were brought in 1991 according to the guarentee, I am presuming they are a mans pen as they are what I would class as 'quite chunky' cigar shaped .... I am looking to sell these pair to someone who will actually make use of them.

My problem is I dont know really what they are and despite much research on the net am not much further forward, if I furnish this post with as much info as I have can someone point me in the right direction please!

Both pens are Meisterstuck Solitaire according to the box, both gold (plated) with a tongue and groove effect (excuse my laymens terms)

The Ball point has 'W.Germany' written on the cap along with DB 256412

The Fountain Pen I think from reading other desc's is a piston fill/cartridge, that has just 'germany' written on it and on the nib 18k an 4810

They were both given as a gift to me and so have a little history to add as well.

Any help anyone can give will be appreciated.

Is there a way you could post some photos? Is one a fountain pen and the other a ball point or pencil?

Are they like this one only fatter or the same size?

That is exactly it .. and looks to be the same size.

One fountain pen and one ball point

I can try to post some photos but I doubt if my camera will do much justice

Any photos are better than none. Many MB's look the same, but are not.

Meldy, is there anyway you can post the length and width or circumference of the fountain pen. Also note if the pen is a piston fill or converter fill. That should help better identify what model the pen is.

This should help:

Montblanc 146 14.0 cm long 13.2 mm diameter

Montblanc 149 14.7 cm long 14.8 mm diameter

I use a fountain pen because one ought, every day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and, if it were possible, to write a few reasonable words with a fountain pen.

thank you very much for your help

I am away for a few days but hopefully will get the measuring tape out when I get back, I have a feeling it will be a 146

I believe it is a converter fill .... but I have been wrong before!

If it has a piston /cartridge converter in the fountain pen it is a 144. Assuming it is a gold plate and not solid gold the price now is $1,025.00

The ballpoint in that size is a 164 and the price today is $795.00

The the 146 was piston fill only $1255.00 and the 147 is a Travler $1150.00 and that is a cartidge fill only

These are her pens. Hope someone with a wealth of knowledge can indicate the models and value for the lady.

Pens that look exactly like these appear in an old catalog that I have from 1994, which would be from the same era as your pen. The "DB 256412" number on the ballpoint is a serial number, which MB started putting on pens around 1991; it's not unusual for pens to not have the serial number at this time.

These pens are from the Solitaire collection at the time, and are vermeil, which is solid silver with gold plating. The engraved pattern is called "barley". The model numbers are 144V for the fountain pen (which was available as either a cartridge/converter filler or a piston filler), and 164V for the ballpoint. They also made 146-sized piston-fill fountain pens, pencil and rollerball models in the same materials.

1994 retail prices were US$685 for the fountain pen, and $495 for the ballpoint.

I'm having problems connecting to eBay at the moment, but that's where I go to check values.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
