Ebonite Pen

In all fairness I think a no-aligned member of this forum should evaluate this pen. I am of course, as always, ready to take on this responsibility. You may PM me for my address.

I know that you are joking, but actually I do something similar.

If you go to my website, you will see a spot in the upper right where you can insert your email to subscribe to my blog.

Every so often I mess up a pen. Maybe the clip was mounted a little off, or may be the finish is not great. One of my pens turned out fantastic, and then I left it under the hot photo studio lights for about a half hour while I was editing photos. The finish wasn't melted, but it rippled. I was pretty angry.

For my blog subscribers, I offer these flawed pens as free trials. About once every two months, I email my subscribers, and show them my flawed pens. They can pick one and give it a whirl. There's nothing wrong with these pens functionally, but I won't sell them because of minor isues.

I don't put good nibs on them, as this is all based on the honor system, but my subscribers can get a feel for the heft and balance, etc. and then send it back.

I may get burned by offering this, but I'm giving it a try...so far so good.

I've shipped my flawed pens to different people about 6-7 times, they all came back to me, and they all bought a pen as result.

I think that the fountain pen community is a pretty good crowd!

Thanks for your comments!

I am not joking, I never joke.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
