Ebonite Pen

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd share what came out of the shop tonight.

This is ebonite with a Taccia steel nib.

I really like this design. My short term goals with this design are to eliminate the centerband, and then add some more taper to the cap. I want to emulate the Sailor King of Pen, and the only thing holding me back are those two issues.

Sharp looking pen. Any other colors/patterns of ebonite? Any metal inside the pen?

That is one damn nice pen :)

Beautifully finished.

Would you care to share some details - are the parts from a kit (which kit), is the band glued or swaged etc....

This really is an impressive looking pen. I went to your website and saw your other work. You have an excellent sense of style in your designs, and, from the photography, the workmanship looks top notch. Congratulations!

very nice.

how fat can you make these? the mb149 and the danitrios are a little on the small side for my hand.

The cap can get as big as one may wish.

The barrel can be altered in any way, with one exception....where it meets the section, it has to be .536"

could you do a pen without a section? say .70 with a step down to .625 that incorporates the threads. that way the ebonite goes all the way to end of the pen with a huge honkin nib coming out the end.

In all fairness I think a non-aligned member of this forum should evaluate this pen. I am of course, as always, ready to take on this responsibility. You may PM me for my address.

I'm actually working on that. I'm tring to accomplish all ebonite sections. I have a strategy, but so far it's failed. I'm back to the drawing board, and I have a better strategy now.

I know that you are joking, but actually I do something similar.

If you go to my website, you will see a spot in the upper right where you can insert your email to subscribe to my blog.

Every so often I mess up a pen. Maybe the clip was mounted a little off, or may be the finish is not great. One of my pens turned out fantastic, and then I left it under the hot photo studio lights for about a half hour while I was editing photos. The finish wasn't melted, but it rippled. I was pretty angry.

For my blog subscribers, I offer these flawed pens as free trials. About once every two months, I email my subscribers, and show them my flawed pens. They can pick one and give it a whirl. There's nothing wrong with these pens functionally, but I won't sell them because of minor isues.

I don't put good nibs on them, as this is all based on the honor system, but my subscribers can get a feel for the heft and balance, etc. and then send it back.

I may get burned by offering this, but I'm giving it a try...so far so good.

I've shipped my flawed pens to different people about 6-7 times, they all came back to me, and they all bought a pen as result.

I think that the fountain pen community is a pretty good crowd!

Thanks for your comments!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
