I have been a member here for some time and read posts but figured it would be a good time to post a pen now that you all have a penmaking portion.

Here are two fountain pens I have made recently. I have bought a metal lathe and I am working on doing more custom made parts.

To those who don't know him RTW... is my buddy Johnny Wooten from Texas... and is owner of the forum The Pen Shop

Probably the best pen turning forum on the web...

I really hate to have to say it  , but Johnny does some real nice work and also custom casts some of his own acrylics in fascinating colors...

Glad to see you on board and showing some of your stuff Johnny...

OH BTW, just to brag a bit about him.... a couple of years ago Johnny organized a fantastic charity affair for the Childrens's Medical Center in Dallas (I believe that is the location). Pen turners from all over contributed over 200 pens to be auctioned off by the Medical Center.

Johnny also managed to get sponsors from the pen making community to offer prizes to those who contributed the pens. Staff and parents of children at the medical center voted on the pens and who received the prizes...

Penturner and I were proud to contribute... in fact Pen Turner won a first place for the pens he contributed and I won a second place.

But that was not what it was all about... it was about the kids... and they definitely won on that count...

Great to see you here Johnny! So you finally decided to start using your fountain pens instead of just selling them :roflmho:

This is a great site, I've been here for several years and MOST of the folks here are pretty level-headed, but there are a few....

Anyway, Tom gave you a nice introduction, and I've got nothing to add except that:

Hey Everyone!!!! Rootin' Tootin' Johnny Wooten is here :bunny01: :bunny01:

BTW for all you FPN'ers, The red pen in the photo aka"the Red Baron" is the pen that I made that won the contest mentioned by Old Griz.

HEY, I never said I recommended him... only that he was my friend....

Now if you stop and think a minute.... Obi, Penturner and JD are my friends also... that should say a lot about my values (or lack thereof) :hmm1:  :hmm1:

Thanks for all the compliments. I am trying to get into more custom pens. I want to make all of my own hardware. I kinda look at it that anyone can get a miter saw and cut some wood and glue it together, but not everyone can make a one of a kind pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
