Hi all,

Going for a couple of weeks to Austria (Vienna and Salzburg).

Anybody can give me tips on good FP and/or paper shops?

Thanks!

By the lack of replies to this post I found from a few months back, I am guessing there are not many Austrians on this forum!

But if you are out there and can recommend some good local FP-related resources, give me a shout.

Best wishes,

There's a quite well equipped store (new stuff only) in Kärntnerstrasse, which You'll probably pass on the "Sylvester Trail" setup in the inner city, and one elderly gentleman trading and restoring pens "only before 1960" in Lärchenfelderstrasse, in the boutique of his son.

Nothing else that I know of.

That's why I send my pens to Richard, meaning 20+ EUR postage and veeeeeery looooooooong waiting!

But why don't You give me a ring when You are here! (send You my number with a PM.)

Greetings Martin

Thank you Martin!

That's interesting, I've walked on Kärntnerstrasse many times and did not see a FP shop there. But that entire area is so crammed with luxury goods shops and tourists, that a FP shop may be easy to miss unless you know exactly where to look. Do you recall what this place is called?

I send my pens to Richard Binder as well, and thankfully he is only an hour away from my Boston residence. Waiting period is still the same though!

I was saddened to hear (and then see) that Theyer & Hardtmuth had stopped trading. It must have been the oldest writing/pen shop in existence. I can't imagine where one would exist older.

There is one very nice pen/paper shop in the 1st district, but unfortunately I cannot recall exactly where it is!!! My husband is from Vienna so we travel there often. I'm racking my brains but all to no avail. To say it's on a small side street helps not a bit as most of the city is small side streets! :) However, they have a nice chain called "Libro" where you can get a good selection of inexpensive student type pens and tons of good paper. Plus, on practically every corner in the city and in every small town you will find a Papeterie where they will surely have some type of FPs and ink. Lamy seemed to be the most popular brand when I was there last year. Also, if you search the archives I may have posted the name of the shop in the 1st district. If you're looking for good paper, pens, etc. you will definitely not leave Vienna empty handed.

I couldn't find a single dedicated pen shoppe in either city but then again didn't look intensely.Vienna should have something.A si recall, there was a stationary shoppe near Wienerwald and St Stephen's in Vienna.I was buying a Mahler score at a book shoppe there and remember walking past such a store. Not much info but maybe it will help.

Oh I know! Pretty much every stationary shop in Germany and Austria carries FPs, inks and paper. Of course the prices are almost always higher than in the US, but sometimes you find things that are simply not available here, so it's always worth it to browse around.

It's unlikely that I will be on the Silverster Trail, though; I actually try to avoid that area during crazy holiday crowds.

Definitely not, as I will not be leaving period : ) I wish this were a fun winter holiday, but alas I am moving there for work and am "looking forward" to an insanely stressful next several months!

Hello,

I had a good experience about four weeks ago with:

WFW - Wiener Füllfeder Werkstätte

Leo Grahofer

Lerchenfelderstrasse 29

A-1070 Wien

Tel. 0043-1-5138150

The shop is very interessting: clothing and vintage pens, son and father together in one shop.

I bought an Omas leverfiller from the thirties in near mint condition, fine flexible nib! Very good!

Not far away (Mariahilferstraße) there is a stationary shop (Miller) where you can find several brands (pens, ink, paper) in high quality (Omas, Aurora, Pelikan...).

I hope, this is helpful to you! Tell me, when you'll be back.

Thank you Anna Monika, it is definitely helpful. I am not coming back, am staying in Austria -- but will try to report on the pen shop situation there once I explore it thoroughly : )

I woke up this morning and the name Kunstpapier was rolling around in my head for the shop in the first district. :-)

No promises... I wish I saved business cards... Note, this was a very upscale shop since it's in the first district. Outrageous prices plus the dollar is weak against the Euro but they had so many pens!!!

Whenever I am in Vienna, Austria I pay a visit to MAYR & FESSLER and treat myself with a pen. I am a collector and I travel around the world - so I compare prices everywhere I go. I can thruthfully say that this company has very fair prices and a great selection which is why I keep coming back here !

They carry all the major brands and also some rather rare brands.

If you visit you will come across some "old friends" ! :)
This is a fabulous pen store !!!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
