Large collection of pens with no nibs

I'm sure I am not the only one to notice, but one seller on eBay is selling very large lots of vintage fountain pens, all with no nibs. the seller is magic-cottage

Lots of really great pens there with very bad photos. I was outbid on a set, but it sure would be fun to get one of these boxes with 10 or 20 pens to work on!

got some things from him. Bad pictures allow room for bad goods, fortunately not the case. I wonder what happened with those nibs? all stuff I have from him would be pre- WWII, and I notice that among the no nibs lot, I'd say that 90% are pre WWII, maybe the gold got donated????

Please don't send PM's, use my e-mail instead. Thanks!

If I had to guess I'd say a few years ago someone thought the gold was worth more than the pens. Around here that seems ridiculous.

I'll guarantee you that the nibs were yanked out and sold in the early 80's when gold topped out. I know of lots of vintage pens that were trashed just to get the nibs out. I remember TV ads for guys who would set up in motel rooms and advertise to buy scrap gold when it was $3-400/oz.

There's a lot of good stuff in there....if you have nibs for them.

It's very tempting. I hope the prices move a bit higher so I won't get sucked in. :o

so many pens, so little time.......

Well, I didn't get sucked in.

But now I've got to jerk out all my nibs to increase the value of my pens......

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
