Show and Tell

The Wahl Forum has been quiet lately, a little too quiet. As Moderator I am supposed to stimulate activity on the forum. So, I thought I would ask you all who have recently acquired Wahl or Eversharp, or Olympian, or Paramount, or Monarch pens to show and tell.

I recently acquired a lot of 4 pens from France, each one is another color of pyralin plastic (Coral, Lapis, Green-Bronze and Jade). All in pretty nice shape and all at a lot price that brought the average cost per pen down enough so that resale is possible without the normal "hold" period. I also got a nice "combo" pen and pencil that is worth a look. And a lot of 24 vintage Wahl Eversharp Pen ads from the 20's 30's 40's and 50's.

BTW, Pen magazine advertisements are a great source of information about pens and especially the Wahl Ebversharp lines of pens because thes Wahl company deid not publish a complete catalog every year. These ads are completely authoratative when showing original features, claims, colors, and construction in some cases. The back side of these ads also carry some pretty interesting literature and period ads too. I will post a picture tonight of some off these items...just wanted to get the ball rolling again.

Also someone was asking after replacement Skyline barrels of which I have plenty. Would whoever it was that was asking please contact me?

Thanks

Great looking box John.

Here's my find. The clip has alot of brassing. Can that be repaired reasonably?

That's not brassing. Your pen is wartime production, and the clip and trim band and lever are gold over sterling silver. The silver atoms in this combination tend to migrate upward through the gold layer to form a distinct surface layer of pure metallic silver -- which is black! You can take this silver off by rubbing with a Sunshine Cloth (or with Simichrome on a 100% cotton flannel rag). You'll get results like this (on a wartime Vacumatic):

My most recent Wahl acquisition came in a bag of pens that Barbara's brother-in-Law Garry picked from some Louisville antique malls. Most of those pens were Sheaffers, but there was this very nice brown Modern Stripe Skyline:

The gold derby came out of my parts box; the original plastic derby was shot.

(I'm still jonesing for a Modern Stripe with a cap band...)

You want a striper with cap band? Gosh, whatever did i do with that Blue set with wide cap band and metal derby. Set, i mean, not just pen. So pretty, if not quite perfect. I 'm sure i have it lying about somewhere. Never really planned to keep it forever. Suppose it could go to a new home.... etc ad nauseum :roflmho:

Gab later. Miami Show Scene keeping me busy.

Now that is what a Skyline is supposed to look like. Nice job!

Hi All,

Great topic.

This actually isn't my latest Wahl acquisition, but I can't resist the opportunity to show it again - only because it's such a lovely little set. (Apologies to those who've already seen it.)

Steve: nice work on the Skyline. Simichrome can sometimes do wonders.

Cheers,

Jon

  • 1 month later...

I would imagine some of the acquisitions from Washington will be showing up soon, but before they do here is one I won off ebay about a month ago. I was out of town till last week so couldn't show it sooner. I think it is a beauty and hope you all might have the answers to some questions I have about it. It came with a Weidlich #2 nib, so question one is what is the correct nib? Number 2 is what model is this Wahl? I am fairly certain the it dates to 1922-1932, but can that be narrowed down? Lastly, is the engraving on this done hand? Thanks folks, and I hope you like it.

Pure silver is, well, silver. The black material is silver sulfide.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
