Cy 2021 Us Pen Show

All future scheduled US Pen Shows for 2020 have been canceled (Colorado, Detroit, Ohio). I'm going through withdrawal from not being at a pen show for six months (I was at Baltimore).

I can't imagine pen shows resuming until US vaccines have been approved and widely distributed and taken up by people. I don't see that happening till June-July of 2021 (based solely on logistics of manufacturing and distributing), which would suggest the DC Pen Supershow in early August 2021 may be the first pen show of the year. Slow uptake of the vaccine could delay this even further.

Do you agree?

No, I expect the first one will be the one in Raleigh, N.C. , unless some of the shows traditionally scheduled earlier are moved to later in the year to May or July.

The show I would expect to be moved is the Chicago show. I can easily imagine it being moved to the very end of May, if there are widespread vacinations by then. Given that many of the participants of pen shows are those who are a bit older (65 and above) than the general population, while they may not be the first or second group offered vacinations, they likely would be offered it fairly early.

My best guess is that vacinations will first be given to Health Care Professionals providing needed care, then to the military and essential government employees, followed by high risk individuals and first responders, then the elderly (over 65) that have no complicating conditions. After that, healthy children and the last group being healthy adults.

This schedule would maximize the effcient use of limited resources and bring down the death rate the fastest.

I project Pen Shows will be held after those most likely to die from Covid 19 are vacinated, but before everyone is vaccinated.

Note that Dromgoole's held a pen show in Dallas, to replace the usual one, just this weekend. I don't know anything about how it went, but there was reportedly a lot of space between tables, and a limit on the number of people who could be inside at any one time.

Even with a vaccine I would bet that things would still be different, that masks might be required, and the press of bodies against each other would be greatly reduced. But it can be done if the show operators want to have a show with, likely, much smaller profits.

It will certainly be interesting to see how things develop.

It went great, Dallas that is.

My guess is that not everyone will take vaccinations, if it even happens. Some of us don't trust new vaccinations. Let it be on market for a few years and I'll think about it. As much as I think about flu vaccinations. Haven't done one of those.

I'm betting that everything will go back to normal. Shows will happen again.

I agree, 2021 is another pandemic year. Though people will do what they do. Personally, I'd love to visit the great show in Raleigh again but probably in a different year. Hopefully, Terry and crew can sustain until then for others so inclined.

quite a few of our demographic are considered vulnerable to COVID.. I don't see a lot of participation at pen shows until well into 2021.

I hope to see the Triangle Pen Show (Raleigh NC) return in 2021 and I hope Terry and his crew can make that happen.

I was just at a outdoor/indoor flea market on the 27th and about 25% of the vendor spaces were empty. A good crowd, but not packed. You had to were a mask in the buildings.

The thing to keep in mind is that there are many parts to a successful large pen show which a mini show does not have, so a successful mini show does not portend that large shows will return quickly.

Large shows have participants who travel significant distances to attend.

Large shows are on multiple days.

Large shows are in expensive venues, typically hotel banquet facilities.

Large shows have large numbers of participants.

Large shows have in person auctions.

These characteristics create difficulties in regard to ensuring the safety of participants, especially those highly vulnerable to Covid-19 who make up a significant part of the population that regularly attends pen shows.

And so, until there are widely available successful treatments and/or vacines we will need to wait.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
