My First Pen

Recommended Posts

I’ve been lurking for quite some time, building up the nerve to try turning my own kitless pen. I studied the tutorials put up by BigShed and Shawn Newton on the IAP forums. I watched Shawn’s YouTube videos. I finally decided to take the plunge and after shattering 3 pens worth of blanks, managed to make this. Turned on a Jet 1221vs wood lathe. Because I haven’t yet invested in the tooling to make custom sections, I used an El Grande nib with section for my first go.

I’m happy with my first successful attempt. There are many things I’d do differently next time: slightly shorter tenon on the barrel, less drastic a step between barrel and tenon. I need to start saving my pennies for a triple-start tap and die set because the 5 turns it takes to put on and take off the cap is driving me nuts.

I’d love to get feedback and any advice! Thanks for looking.

Best,

Jane

Great effort, good looking pen. Nice to see that you found my tutorial useful.

One way to reduce the step from barrel to section is to have the cap go over the barrel rather than have it the same OD as the barrel.

The tutorial was great. The pictures really help. Gave me a good starting point for trial and error with the tools I have on hand.

Nice start. I like the outside shape.

Getting the barrel and cap to have a smooth outer connection and keeping the step down on the barrel small, is a fine balancing act. Once you do a few more, you will get the feel for how thin you can go.

Your pen is lovely — you did a great job!

Although you do not like the five turns for taking off and putting on the cap, I like the idea.  That makes for a sure fit and nice protection for the nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
