Bbc Article On Benefits Of Note Taking On Paper

And something I read recently - "Computers and digital media last forever, or five years, whichever comes first."

That is true. Several years ago, I was one of two moderators for an online special interest group. The material we covered in the five years we moderated the discussions was a goldmine of technical and historical information. Some of the material was used by my co-moderator for a privately published book. That is, until the owner of the site decided to 'pull the plug'. Everything that either of us, or others hadn't downloaded as anything other than URL copy disappeared into the nether regions of the ethernet.

I've always taken notes by hand. I take notes of repair methods and information for future reference, with sketches, dimensions, detailed instructions in some cases. For years as a radio engineer I kept a notebook, and instructions, notes on conversations with everyone that I talked with - and still have them, and sometimes go back to them.

I always have a pad with me, and two or three pens to play with during any meeting however we meet - live, conference call or Zoom. I would go nuts without a doodle pad, and the notes remind me of things I have to do, and what was discussed.

Typing would be totally unproductive.

Not to mention the fact that hand written notes seem to be more multitasking than using the PC, I can follow a telecon in Teams, look at reference material on the PC screen, such as spreadsheets, presentations, etc. and take hand written notes at the same time! on the pc at the same time it would be impossible...

I took a pad to with me to the bank when I was looking for a loan to replace the roof on our house. I took notes. The loan was approved, but it came back with a much higher interest rate. I went in with my notes and pointed out that according to my notes..... The loan officer said, "I remember you taking notes," agreed with me, and lowered the interest rate on the loan. It saved me quite a chunk of change. Taking notes is good. Date, time, people involved, conversation details.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
