Something Old - Something New To You

If you have more than 100 posts and promise to do a review of both the ink and the pen (so at least two reviews), submit your name here and tell us:

  1. What colors you like (or want to try) and why. (For example, you might say, I've never tried a murky ink and I'm interested, or I am in love with BSB and want to see what other inks are like it);
  2. What brands of ink you like (or want to try) and why. (For example, you might say, I've never tried a Noodler's ink and I'd like to try one);
  3. What sort of nibs you you like (or want to try) and why. (For example, you might tell us that you have always used stubs and would like to try an extra fine nib)
  4. Once you have the PIF, submit pictures here and links to both reviews.

Here are the other "rules" - you pay for shipping. If you don't love what I send you - you PIF it to someone who will love it or PIF it forward. I will send you a pen that I am no longer using and at least one sample of ink, but maybe more. You won't know what you are getting and I'm not promising any particular ink, sample or pen.

I don't know how many of these I will do, but at least three. I will start these on Saturday and I will close the PIF after a few days, probably Monday.

I'm happy to ship internationally, but I don't know if the delays will cause a problem so keep that in mind if you post.

This choice will not be random, I'm giving these to first to the posters who have brought the most cheer to FPN and to me. Bonus points if you are a frequent poster or reviewer. The more persuasive you are, that you will use and enjoy this PIF, the better.

BTW, I still owe Karmachanic a special package.

THIS PIF HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE INKSTERS!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Hey, thanks for the offer Amber

1.What colors you like (or want to try) and why.

My favorite inks are those in the blue or blue-black category but honestly I have too many of them that I forget which pens I have filled up with which blue ink. I like blue because it is suitable for everything, in pretty much whatever shade you want. I would like to try something red-black but that's not a requirement. Some ink brands I'm interested in but haven't wowed me enough to get more than a sample or two from have been colorverse, De atramentis, or organics studio (beyond Thoreau Walden pond)

2. What brands of ink you like (or want to try) and why. (For example, you might say, I've never tried a Noodler's ink and I'd like to try one);

My go to ink brands are Pilot with their iroshizuku line, Diamine, and Waterman. All good color selections and inks that work in pretty much any pen. I bought a bottle of pelikan 4001 blue-black and really didn't like that one, nor do I really adore any noodler's inks I've gotten so far, too variable in their properties.

3. What sort of nibs you you like (or want to try) and why. (For example, you might tell us that you have always used stubs and would like to try an extra fine nib)

I pretty much only use fine nibs but I have a few extra fine and a couple mediums. I've never tried a stub or broad or flex before.

4. Once you have the PIF, submit pictures here and links to both reviews.

I agree to this, I haven't been able to write with a fountain pen as much recently and this will be a good opportunity to give me a chance to write.

Very nice PIF.

1. My favorite colors lean towards the blues and purples, I'm open to just about any colors except yellows or pinks.

2. The one color I have always wanted to try is Noodler's Prime of the Commons. I believe this ink is only available in the UK. I have other Noodler's inks and am satisfied with them. One brand I have always wanted to try is Caran d' Ache, I have read positive reviews on their inks.

3. The one nib I would love to try is an oblique, I'm right handed so, I'm not sure if I would use a right or left oblique.

4. I agree to submitting a picture of the PIF and links to both reviews.

Hi Amber, this is a very kind offer, and if it weren't for [the pandemic that shall not be named] I'd be very tempted to jump on board. Shipping from USA to AUS is horribly constipated at the moment, though - and truth be told, my ink drawer is fairly full!

Thanks though for doing this - hope you get a few more takers!

So generous, as always!

I have won PIFs from you before, so I understand if that excludes me. If not, I will play by all rules.

Colors: Dark browns (eg Diamine Chocolate, Monteverde Brown Sugar, Iroshizuku Yama Guri) are my historical favorites. Lately I have been on a kick for light and medium browns. I have learned that I do not enjoy heavy sheen, but really like shading. I like (dark) shimmery inks. I am not a fan of scented inks (Id like to try KWZ Honey, but am hesitant bc of scent). Recently I have been enjoying some inks that are slightly murkier or perhaps more muted than I enjoyed before (eg Robert Ostrer Grey Seas and J Herbin Rouille dAncre, both of which I think are surprisingly beautiful In a wide enough nib).

Brands: I find Diamine always reliable. Great range of shades, too. The few Levengers I have tried have great flow. Monteverde also has some great colors. I have been underwhelmed by the two Montblanc inks I tried. The Pelikan Edelstein inks are great. (I also like the Pelikan 4001 brilliant black, but found the blue-black far too dry.) Sailor Jentle inks are great and I want to try some of the Sailor Ink Studio shades, particularly the light and medium browns.

Nibs: I have always loved fine nibs. Japanese F and German EF are my go-to. But I have been enjoying broader nibs, especially as I try more inks. I have a TWSBI B that I have been using as a daily writer lately and I really like it. I would really like to try something slightly broader (Pelikan or Lamy Broad).

Thank you for your generosity..

What colors you like (or want to try) and why.

I have written with fountain pens all my life; but I have written with only a handful of pens and a couple of inks. So a lot of things are new to me.

I have so far tried only Royal Blue (from Bril and Camlin and Parker Quink) and Black (from Bril and Camlin and Parker).

I want to try dark black shade (pigment-based ink), or blue-black shade of blue.

I want to try these colours because of their water-resistance (pigment black) and because the black colours that I currently use are not intensely dark enough for my liking.

What brands of ink you like (or want to try) and why.

I am curious about water-resistant inks (that will be of great practical utility in my writing), even if they are not fully water-proof.

I want to try any brand of ink that offers water-resistance.

What sort of nibs you you like (or want to try) and why.

I have so far used Fine and Medium nibs in Indian-made pens, and Fine/Medium nib from Sheaffer no-nonsense pen.

1) I would like to try a stub nib. Preferably, a stub that is not too wide so that it can be used for creating interesting line variations during regular writing. I have an italic-nib pen that I use to practice calligraphy, and I am happy with it. I am looking for a pen with stub-nib that can be used for routine writing.

2) I also want to try a broad or BB nib. I am not sure whether I will like it, but I want to try and see.

3) I want to try any European nib brand (Jowo, Bock, Schmidt) since I have heard good opinions about them on FPN

Once you have the PIF, submit pictures here and links to both reviews.

I agree to do both.

Amber, good to see you still at it.

I'm in the same boat as Jamerelbe - no reliable mode of transport between our locations, but not really in a position to ask for yet more samples from you or anyone anyway... I guess I am rediscovering a lot of my existing ones anyway! and sometimes mixing them...

a fountain pen is physics in action... Proud member of the SuperPinks

I still owe you a review from your LAST PIF, so I'm going to pass on this one. Speaking of which, is that sample vial labeled "MontBlanc Dark Blue" their current Midnight Blue, or something else?

It was some special ink named Dark Blue. :)

All, I'm on the phone with tech support AGAIN for my postage software so I won't be packaging things up until later this week assuming that I get the software fixed today. If not, then I will have a delay of a while longer. I don't anticipate running out of ink or pens before then.

Thank you, Amber (and your accomplices!), for the awesome package!

I have not tried any of the inks before. And a fun assortment of pens. The fude nib is my first and it is great! And I had never heard of Scribes Ink. The Merlot shade is beautiful and I have been looking for a perfect autumn red.

Will post reviews in the next few days.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
