The models shown appears to be heavily 'inspired' by the Platinum Balance and Platinum Vicoh PTL-5000A respectively (but the Platinum models' nibs have 'straight' nibs that don't have flared 'shoulders').

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I say the Cigar shaped pen is simply too generic to say its based on this or that ... that shape and style can be said to be resembling something and fa too many something ( dated back all the way to pre war years. The metal pens IMHO seems imore like inspired by some old Montblanc in term of profile and styling , I had quite a few Platinum Vicoh, while general shape are there the proportion not quite where the old Montblanc pretty much spot on

Hm I wonder where I might find these for purchase from USA, and what the prices are (particularly for the 14K nib version).

Edit: found some reference prices for the first pen

(I do not endorse that website to actually buy from, and there are some questionable reviews about it, so it’s just for more pictures and a rough price)

“I admit it, I'm surprised that fountain pens are a hobby. ... it's a bit like stumbling into a fork convention - when you've used a fork all your life.”

If you say so.

I don't have any (old or new) Montblanc pens, and I don't want to acquire any, so I haven't researched/studied them and I can't say. I do have a couple of Platinum Vicoh pens (as well as a Sailor Young Profit pen), and I'd say the flat-ended HongDian model shown above is, well, 'inspired' by either of those models.

it kind of all look like the old Montblanc from the 60's ( and some Pelikan too ) but then I could not say any are really original, even back then the Montblanc & Pelikan were all considered pretty generic alright , that straight taper with flat top style had been used on pens for so long , there is simply too many of similar from pretty much all the brands then. With fountain pen styling, unless one goes berserk, really there is nothing new under the sun .. its a pen and there is only that much one can do to a piece of rod , it can be straight , it can be tapered, it can be curvved , it can had flat top, it can had pointy top, it can had ciger end , it can had thick band , thin band , no band .... pretty much all ad been there since way way back.

Though generic , these 2 do looks to me interesting on their own , not as much as flashy design goes. But straight forward classic styling and just the basic Black or White .. these combination always work and won't go out of style soon. Am not a fan of that kind of clip though , they should just use their old straight piece of a flat clip.

I can understand that, cause I see the same , the Mfr themselves refer to their product ( brand name ) some time as Hing Dian ( 2 word ) , which is , I believe , what should be the official way how the brand are to be named cause that's how they put that on their stands in shows ( and on their products ). But then sometime in their article / online or paper .. their naming become Hongdian or Hongding ... I wager their Marketing Dept got some explaining to do to their boss .. but on the pens its always Hong Dian ( 2 words ) which correspond to their native name in the native language ( again in 2 words not 1 )

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
