Front Line Worker: Parker 51 Set

Recommended Posts

As a tiny gesture of appreciation, I'd like to pass a 1964 Midnight Blue and Gold Parker 51 set along to one of the frontline workers who has been keeping us all going over the last few months. This could be your chance to try out one of the great classics of all time! You could be a doctor, or a retail clerk, or a bus driver, just let me know when you request the set. I'll cover postage too.

The pen has a medium fine nib that writes with character on better paper. On poor quality paper it can be a little gushy for my taste. It's in perfect shape, having had a strip and rebuild with a new (steel) breather tube. The pencil works perfectly, and a box is included.

The pen has a nice history. In 1964 it was a gift to John Cooper, an insurance salesperson in central British Columbia, in recognition of his community work. The smooth gold caps are engraved to memorialise this fact.

I do reserve the right to choose the recipient on an entirely whimsical basis.

It is now Wednesday afternoon, and I'll be closing this off at the weekend. Please PM me, or reply here if you prefer.

Many thanks to all frontline workers.

Ralf

I was thinking about getting in on this, I'm working as an intern at a plant that produces adhesives for industry use like streetlights, under car dashboards, etc. I think I'll pass because I don't see that as essential enough but I appreciate the offer, may I request a writing sample though? I'm curious how fine it writes.

Well, I qualify. School bus driver and school maintenance man. We got 8 extra weeks of cleaning, painting, new floors and more done.

And thank you for the opportunity. I've missed out on giving a couple of pens to students this past year. I usually give one per semester. Yet, no second semester.

Had problems with image upload suddenly, but here's a writing sample on pretty nice paper (but not Rhodia!) . . .

Ditto. You said it before I got a chance to.

What a great offer....like most, I don’t qualify for this, but I want to participate if you’ll let me!

If you’re interested, I’ll send the OP a bottle or two of ink to include with the pen.

What a cool offer, ralfstc!

Not an entry, just a thank you.

The winner is sure to enjoy it and to always recall the generosity.

  • 1 month later...

I have to say, that is a great pen and lovely to write with. My friend has one that was originally her fathers and I have had the joy to clean it, fill it, and write with it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
