Mystery Ink! Can Anyone Tell Me About It?

Hi Fountain Penners,

Once again I turn to the collective for information.

I purchased this lovely bottle of ink a lifetime ago from fountain pen store somewhere between Los Angeles and Los Gatos, CA. My guess is, it’s no longer with us.

The ink is a very fast dry turquoise-ish. Behaves well in any pen I’ve inked. Would love to know more about the ink, origins, other colors, and where to buy more. All I have are these photos.

Can anyone tell me anything? Thanks again! Stay safe.

A friend of mine gave me a partial bottle of Campo-Marzio Bordeaux a couple of years ago (I had seen a bottle of Campo-Marzio previously at a booth at a flea market somewhere in WV or MD on the way to the Baltimore Washington Pen Show but didn't buy it because I was afraid that it was going to not be FP safe). I like the color very much (and I'm not normally a fan of dark reds/burgundies/maroons).

I'd love to see a writing sample of the Turkese.

My bottle is still that shape (I don't know how old it is -- my friend got it from someone, probably on Craigslist or Freecycle).

Hadn't noticed until you mentioned the shape and looked at the photo again -- my bottle has a screw on cap, and that has a rubber stopper. Dunno if that makes it really old, or the previous owner of the ink lost or damaged the metal cap and found a handy substitute....

Campo Marzio has eighteen inks in the 2007 Clark's Ink Sampler.

eta: Greg Clark found them to have generally no better than good resistance to water and sunlight, and found pH from 1.8 to 8.9.

I found their site, where they now only list six colors in 30ml bottles: Blu, Arancio (orange), Bordeaux, Turchese, Tabacco, and Blue Notte. In 150 ml bottles, they have Nero (black), Bordeaux, Rosso, Blu Notte, Verde, Ciclamino (lilac), Blu, Arancio, Seppia, Tabacco, Turchese, and Viola. There is no information on out-of-stock 30ml bottles, so they may have more colors that are (as of this writing) out of stock. Prices are very reasonable, 19 euros for 150ml bottles, and 5 for 30ml bottles.

Okay, I won't take it personally that no-one commented on the writing sample.

Question: does anyone know if Campo Marzio has a distributor in the US?

Hi there,

No. Don't take it personally...

Actually, I had lost track of this thread and forgot all about it, but thanks for the writing sample. :)

I'm glad to read the ink is so well behaved; I'm not aware of any U.S. distribution - which is probably why I never heard of this brand before.

Thnx,

Sean :)

Lucked out and found this on eBay!

Have no idea how old it is, other than the second I began opening the sealed, it disintegrated.

Will come back with some thoughts on the ink in a bit.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
