The Greatest Pencil I've Ever Used

Hi all,

Aside from the venerable Blackwing by Eberhard Faber (not that horribly gritty and toothy modern imposter); the #600 NEWS pencil by the Musgrave Pencil Company out of Tennessee; is without a doubt, the BEST pencil I've ever used. :)

It does wear down easier than most, but once you use one, you won't care. :D

I'll try 2 add a pic. :)

Sorry, folks,... my pic file is too big for FPN. :(

But it's a round black pencil with white lettering, (sans eraser).

Haven't used the 600 News yet, but the Musgrave Tennesse Red is right now my favorite pencil. The core is awesome, the wood beautiful, and the smell unmatched by any other.

You should give it a try.

Musgrave sent me one (and a Bugle 1816) with my order of the Tennesse Reds. It is a great pencil, one of the 22 that are tied for first place in my list of Best Pencils I've Ever Used.

Tennesse Red also on that 22 tier?

- Modern Blackwing Pearl...not the Modern 602. As Sean says, it is gritty. I have 1 1/2 of the original Eberhard Faber Blackwings, and they are harder than today's Pearl.

- Favorite all-day pencil: Eberhard Faber Mongol #1. (Found a stash about twenty years ago in a stationery store that never threw anything away and never had clearance sales. Bought every box they had.

- Favorite mechanical pencil: Autopoint Jumbo .046 (1.1mm) or Alvin Clic-matic 0.7mm in faceted barrel. The Alvin is now sold in cylindrical barrel. Same knurled grip. For the Autopoint pencils, check EBay for the glorious vintage Autopoints with advertising, available in .046 and .036 (.9mm).

Hi Gammada,

I'll have to try the Reds; I hope they're still available, IIRC, they were a LE. I am using their Harvest Deluxe and that makes for a great "office" pencil, where you may want a little better mileage than you'll get from the NEWS 600.

Hi DB,

Another endorsement for the Reds; looks like my hands might be tied and I'll be forced to buy some. :o Well, what else can you do?

HI WELCH!

Great to hear from you again! :)

You lucky stiff!! Its no wonder I can't stand ya. :D

That is one of the advantages of living in The Big City. The Mongols were great pencils - especially the #1's.

I had a small load of their Blue Velvet's in #1, (but I think the Mongols were a notch higher), and those were really pleasant to use, but their gone. :(

Oh, you always have choices. You could:

- Use Musgrave's well laid out website to order a dozen of the Tennessee Reds (and maybe some of the Test Scoring 100s, they are nice, too, and look! a dozen of them would be less than another box of the Reds, and that way you would get a break on the shipping cost instead of buying them later, so hey, it's just common sense to order them as well now) and every time you would pick one up and write with it you would go "Ahh, that's a great pencil" and you would enjoy your writing session and your life would be better.

OR

- Spend the rest of your life wondering what you have missed, harshly judging every pencil you ever use against what you imagine might have been, not knowing, always regretting the opportunities that you have passed up, ending up melancholy and cynical.

Your choice, but I recommend the first option.

Hi DB,

Well, there it is. I'll have to get some Reds. (Communists need not worry; I'm referring to pencils).

I have a little over a half gross of the TS 100's; they used to be one of my favorites before I discovered the 600... now, you can't pry the 600 from behind my right ear. :D

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
