M800 Leaking At Top Of Barrel

Recommended Posts

I recently inked up my red barreled M800, and noticed that after a few moments of writing ink stains on my fingers. I thought I hadn’t cleaned the threads after the filling, so after going over the threads again I used the pen for a while, and the ink reappeared on my hands.

as near as I can tell, the pen is leaking where the barrel meets the section, below the cap threads. The pen has not been mistreated or exposed to extremes of heat or cold.

Anyone else experienced this? Thanks

A separation of the section and barrel seems to happen occasionally to Pelikans, unfortunately (sorry about your pen!). I had the section of a new M320 fall off entirely while in transit from the seller to myself.

My nib from m800 Stressman loosens from writing. Is this something to be concerned about?

I'm wondering if it is worth sending it to be repaired, or if it is beyond repair.

Yes it is worth it. There is another thread about this issue and IIRC Ron Zorn repairs this problem.

It is worth it. A replacement barrel is something like $250. Red barrels are no longer available. I charge $75 for the repair plus return shipping. Contact back channel, by email please, not PM.

I like your avatar BTW. I have pictures of our silver tabby (torby, or Egyptian Mau mix) in that pose on her perch in the sunspot on the mantel.

This should not happen. If what loosens is the whole nib unit you just have to screw it into the body a wee bit tighter. If the nib loosens from the nib unit that is a much bigger problem.

Thank you for the advice. I may have spoken too soon — I have used the pen recently and had no problems. Perhaps there is a bit of separation between the binde and barrel and ink was trapped there. If the problem reappears, I will be in touch.

Thanks also for the comment on the avatar. This was Smudge, who died at age 15 in 2005. She was more my late wife’s cat, but had no problem using me as a couch from time to time.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
