My worst pen nightmare

Recommended Posts

Update: Tracey's checked with the lost and found department of the bus company, and the pen case hasn't come back yet. "People who find fountain pens don't turn them in; they use them," is what she was told. ("But a whole case?" I wail.)

Her collection was mostly Sheaffers, Pelikans, and Watermans, most fairly recent, but with a few vintage ones (a vintage carmine-striated Sheaffer Craftsman, a Parker 45, and a silver vintage Sheaffer that she can't remember the ancestry of), with mostly fine, and a few medium nibs.

If anyone wants to contribute a pen, PM me, and I'll give you a mailing address. Those of you who have already PMed me, thank you so much.

(I have this "worry" that we'll wind up with too many pens for Tracey, and I envision myself as the temporary keeper of the Pen Emergency Stock, in case other people's pen collections get damaged. I'm worrying about Wimg's collection right now, and hoping his pens made it through the flood with minimal damage.)

Ow! I'm hoping for the pens' safe return.

Update on Tracey's lessening pen plight:

Kendall and Psytek generously sent her pens (which, because I am a good and honorable woman, I gave directly to her; of course, now I want an Admiral and a black Esterbrook for myself); she's bought a matte burgundy Prelude and (after seeing my matte grey Javelin) a translucent Javelin from PenHero, and I just gave her a brushed chrome Prelude with what I think is an italic nib, and a cheap grey marbled plastic Hero pen.

So, while she still mourning some of the others, including the carmine-striated Craftsman I'd sold her, her faith in the kindness of humanity has been incredibly uplifted, and she's looking forward to the NYC Pen Show next month. Unlike me, though, she's thinking of attending only one day; I intend to wander around all three. Whee!

(I used to be able to buy Hero Pens in Chinatown for $5, some ten to fifteen years ago, including some that look like the 58 series in matte black, and lovely lightweight plastic ones with smooth nibs in blue, grey, and gold marbled patterns. I should take a jaunt down there again and look for pens, just to see if they're there.)

People are amazing, life is good, I hate the flesh-eating photocopier in the office. In other words, situation normal.

What bus company is it? They usually have a lost and found and the same driver operates the same routes and times (Especially Command)

In the continued acts of kindness, Gerry sent a pen case and a copper Esterbrook, which arrived yesterday.

Yesterday, Tracey took a vacation day.

Today, she's our of the office.

I am WAITING for her to come in, so that I can give her pen case, and see her facial expression.

I AM PATIENT AND SERENE.

SERENE, I TELL YOU.

Of course, I've also been skipping up and down the halls of the office with a hammer and screwdriver in my hands, alternately fixing things and searching for the mute buttons on people's cellphones. My coworkers keep sidling away from me.

All I can say is Tracey better be in the office tomorrow.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
