Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Sailor Nioi Sumire

This is review #20 in my series, with fewer than 100 to go... Here's the YouTube video:

NOTE: The below images seem a little too purple to me. This is a very blurple ink - maybe even a purple blue rather than a blue purple.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Great job Liz. :) Interesting how the closeup and scan seem different....The scan looks like Violette Pensée/ North African violet rang whereas the closeup is in the range of Kung Te-Cheng and Cie..... :D

Thanks! The "scan" is actually a screenshot from the end of the video. The closeup is a photo taken with a USB microscope.

But yeah, every camera seems to have its own idea on how color should be reproduced - and none of them are right!

Ooo, an ink I have! I like the fact that all your videos are with the same pen, which I also have. It's easy to 'calibrate' things for me.

Thanks!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

How true... My initial reaction was Sailor Ultramarine, I see I wasn't wrong.

If memory serves me write Ultramarine was quiet water resistant. Does Nioi Sumire share the same attribute?

Glad to be your writing guinea pig! :P

I have no idea - I only test those that claim to be resistant. But, special, just for you... back in a sec... OK, lots of ink loss, but I could still easily read what little was left - and it was still the same color, just paler (as opposed to, for example, grey, which is what many non-water-resistant inks leave behind).

  • 1 month later...

I have Sailor Ultramarine and was told it was more purple than blue when compared to this ink. I found Ultramarine more blue than purple. I like this ink much better and I use primarily XXF or XF nibs.

Is this ink more purple than Ultramarine or is it my monitor.

I've never seen Sailor Ultramarine, so I can't compare the two. The images in this thread are too purple on my monitor compared to what I see in real life. I think Nioi-sumire is a very blue purple (not a purple blue), but there's no doubt it's to the blue side, even in isolation.

I don't have any ultramarine left, so I can't do a side by side comparison. But from what I see, Ultramarine is a darker, richer blue.... :)

Here's a Pen Chalet blog article and image (from 2014) that compared, among other pairings, Sailor Jentle Ultramarine and Shikiori (né Jentle Shikisai) Nioisumire: https://www.penchalet.com/blog/new-sailor-jentle-ink-colors-vs-the-old/

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
