Has Anyone Successfully Removed The Adjusting Bar From An Eversharp Adjustable Nib?

Without breaking these tabs? From a first generation Doric.

If so, how? Does heating the tabs with a soldering iron help? I would think annealing them would, but would likely affect the flexibility of the nib itself. I would think.

I have successfully removed one.

The answer to the question you don't want the answer to is, no.

Wait, Todd. Please don't do that to me.

If you did it successfully I presume that means you didn't break the tabs. How did you do it?

Are you going to make me get on my knees and beg? Pleaaaase....

I got it off...tabs broke putting it back on.

Second time I got clever and found a nib with a crack in the backing plate...broke slider putting on a donor plate.

Asked all the nib guys and WE guys I knew...Never got an answer I wanted.

Thanks Todd. Very helpful.

Hardy08, I saw and was inspired by your post. But I was hoping to not end up where you started in the first place.

Annealing the metal should prevent the fracture, but I can't figure out how to do it without affecting the whole nib during the removal procedure. But it might prevent the fracture of the tabs after re-insertion.

Todd, how did you remove the tabs without breaking them?

Thank you again.

Nick

A solution for anealing the slider tabs without affecting the hardenning of the nib itself may be to put the nib in close contact with a large solid block of metal avoiding the temperature to rise within the nib...

Maybe this could be done by creating a groove matching the curvature of the nib within the metal block. A high heat conductive metal should be used (such as copper).

Heating with a soldering iron won't be sufficient a small gaz torch (the one used to melt sugar for cooking for example) would be advisable...

But I'm not sure this would lead to success.

Let us know what you would do !

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
