Phileas "replacement"

Hello, all!

My lovely blue Phileas caught the eye of a new coworker (hallelujah, I am no longer the only "weird pen person" on staff) during a meeting. I had to break the news to him that the pen was discontinued, but I decided to help him out with a Google search for a decent replacement.

Nothing can replace this lovely little gem, IMO. But the Hémisphère kept popping up in my searches. I know nothing of it; would it be considered a reasonably comparable writing experience?

The writer is a relative newbie, and his current workhorse is a Kaweco Sport (black, with a gold clip).

I welcome all opinions, highly biased and otherwise!

Thanks,

Jenny

The Kultur is still made and sold in France, it is exactly the same as the Phileas, just some details are different.

The Embleme is a brand new model, which looks like the love-child of the Kultur/Phileas and Hemisphere.

The Allure/Graduate is a great pen.

I like the Hemisphere as well, just be aware that it has the slimmest grip section of the models I mentioned, which might be too thin for some people. If that isn't a problem, it's a great pen.

Yes,the Hemisphere is a great little pen, but bit more expensive than the Phileas. Might be a step up.

I have a Hemisphere ballpoint. It is lacquered over metal. A heavier pen.

You'll find plenty of Phileas on eBay, although the prices some want for them are pretty astronomical for what was once really an entry level Waterman. Good pens though, my first purchase when I came back to the fold a fair few years ago now....

That is definitely a consideration. I have "man hands" (to use a Seinfeld term!) and prefer a larger pen. I'll bring that up to my coworker, too. He may want to balance comfort and portability.

It looks like the Phileas is readily available on ebay.

That was the first place I sent him! In fact, I had my eyes on one of the green ones (mine is blue) when I searched for him!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
