Montblanc Meisterstück 134 From The 1930S

Recently I was able to purchase a few really nice vintage Montblanc parts. With the help of my parts box I was able to put together a very clean Meisterstück 134 with some nice and early original design features.

Cap top, gripping section and filling knob are made from ebonite while cap sleeve and barrel are celluloid. The feed is the early smooth type. It has a nice 225 two tone nib. The long ink window was kept nicely and the cap shows a crisp imprint. Unfortunately the ebonite part of the filling unit was broken and needs to be re-done. All other parts of the telescopic piston filler are intact and work nicely.

I'm still debating this with myself but I think I will keep the the hard rubber parts as shown on the pictures instead of overly restoring them.

Fantastic!

Good call to keep it original, it looks excellent.

You really do have some of the best pens I've seen.

Congratulations - and thanks for sharing.

Two thoughts:

-You've been on a roll lately with recent acquisitions

-You must have an amazing parts bin!

Thanks for sharing,

Thank you for all of your nice comments.

Not all pens are recent acquisitions; some I just have not taken pictures of until now.

But yes, this was a very lucky recent find of parts and they made a very clean pen.

Cheers

Fantastic window. So hard to find in such condition! Normally I am tempted to restore the ebonite to black, but on some pens where the ebonite is a variation feature of the specific period then I like to leave it as is so that the material is obvious and tells us about the pens production :)

sooooo ... a little update :-)

This is how the filling unit arrived: a piece of the filling unit made from ebonite was broken off and showed some residues of an unknown glue (?!); obviously this attempt of repair did not work in the past.

How would you have moved from there?

Originally I wanted to send it to a professional repair person to have the broken part replaced with a newly manufactured ebonite part. But being impatient and also liking to try to fix things by myself I gave this a try.

Using two-component epoxy glue I tried to glue the broken part back to the filling unit and filling all remaining gaps with the same.

This was a little bit tricky as I was risking to get epoxy everywhere into the filling mechanism to glue everything stuck. After lots of sticky fingers and swearing I was able to have everything set and let it cure for a day or so (while being able to remain all moveable parts moving):

Today everything was cured and hardened so it was time to sand away any excess:

What do you think?

So far I'm happy with the result and really hope that the epoxy repair will last.

Cheers

Great job, let's hope it holds. There is a always the option for Plan B (expert repair) if it doesn't. Its a great pen and deserves to be working again. Enjoy it!

That is brilliant. I hope the repair holds, the truck is to have the right glue on as clean a surface as possible. I can imagine the sticky fingers and swearing you mention!

Sticky fingers crossed!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
