Pelikan Edelstein Moonstone

The 2020 Edelstein is Moonstone, a grey ink. For the first time they used a grey/silver cap instead of the usual black one to match the colour.

I don't tend to like grey inks, especially the warm, dirty, muddy kind of grey (e.g. KWZI Grey Lux, J. Herbin Gris Orage). But sometimes I do enjoy some cold greys, like L'Artisan Pastellier Gris de Payne. I usually like greys that are more complex, like the original version of 3Oysters Doldam (long since reformulated) with its complex shades of yellow and blue.

Moonstone is one of those more complex ones that I like very much. It's a low-saturated cool grey. It writes down as a somewhat purplish grey but dries to a cooler tone. It shows a slightly yellow tint where the ink pools. Not as drastic as the aforementioned Doldam, but still very attractive. It has a lot of shading and halo-ing (dark outlines). It writes reasonably wet and smooth, and it's also mostly water-resistant.

I had been waiting for a first look at this ink. Thank you for showing it. Fortunately, it’s darker than I expected, and looks really lovely. I like the halo-ing effect on written text. The shading also looks quite nice. This is a grey that I will enjoy for sure!

Excellent test. It looks even better than i thought. I wonder how it compares with MB cool/oyster grey.

I have been waiting over a month for my order from LCDC.

I think it matches your avatar perfectly!

Hmmm. GvFC Stone Grey was on the top of the list, but now I'll wait until a sample of Moonstone is available.

Add lightness and simplicate.

Thanks for the review. This looks darker than what someone else's review showed. And I'm like namrehsnoom -- I'm always a sucker for inks that have the "haloing" effect in shading.

This is definitely now on the short list to sample.

I'd seen a writing sample pf this one elsewhere a day or so ago but the place eludes me (I'm looking at the empty whisky glass and wondering why lol)... that other sample put me off as it look too light for my preference, but your samples above show it looks just right in a wet nib, thanks.

Thank you for showing us Moonstone. I do hope we can meet in large groups by September for the Pelikan Hub. This would be the ink that would make me want the matching pen if Pelikan stays true to form and issues a matching M200.

I like gray inks a lot. This one looks wonderful. I also like I halo-ing inks.

This is beautiful!

I like the fact it's a complex color, full of different things to see and not merely one color of grey. Sneaky thing!

Love it!

Thank you for such a wonderful review!

Thank you for this review! I have really enjoyed the last several Edelstein inks and this looks to be no exception. I imagine this would look lovely in a broad nib.

I'll come up with something eventually.

Thank you for the review! I've got a sample coming my way and can't wait to try it. My appreciation of Edelstein inks seems to be on the rise again after the mehness of star ruby (really NOT my color) kinda ruinded the roll they were on with Olivine and Smoky Quartz.

I love the shade of yellow that shows in big deposits, it's something that I'd hoped MB Oyster Grey would do, but my sample wouldn't, and looks a lot like a plain grey, and for that Diamine Grey works beautifully.

Although this has already been said above, I must repeat that and enhance my own love of same inasmuch as "grey isn't just grey" etc. Of course there are sometimes simply light greys and dark greys (Hieronymus' aren't bad) but the best thing about a really good grey is announced when we joggle e.g. between "I see some blue in it" or "I see green". I'm glad that Pelikan finally whipped out a grey. Thanks for your most meritorious review as always!

My psychiatrist told me that if I buy this ink I have to get a Stresemann to put it in.

to add: Waiting for Vijay to get a bottle so that I can order a sample.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
