Hello From Green Bay Wi, Usa

I started using fountain pens about 20 years ago, and have accumulated a small collection of inexpensive examples in that time. I joined FPN in late 2010 (31 January, in fact) but never posted until now. That was also right around the time I started collecting watches, and that put a damper on my pen pursuits in terms of both funds and time. I've only acquired a few pens here and there since then, but recently my interest has been rekindled. I've made a few purchases and been reading up a bit on feeder design lately (facilitated, in part, by the safer-at-home order we're under) so I thought now was a good time to join in.

I attached a shot of my Conklin Symetrik with a watch I've long since flipped, and here's the complete list of my pens, and a few that have moved on to other homes. Of those I currently own, I use all except the first one.

Parker 51, gray with Lustraloy cap

The pen my dad used while a sailor in the US Navy during WWII. I had it restored after he gave it to me in my early fountain pen days. He passed away in 2003. My only vintage pen.

Parker 45, black with steel cap and gold trim, medium nib

The first fountain pen I owned, gifted to me brand new by a colleague after I asked him about one of his pens.

Just pulled the trigger on a blue marble Pelikan M205, fine

Monteverde Denali, fine nib

Pilot Metropolitan, all black with chrome trim, fine

Conklin Symetrik, all black with chrome trim, fine

Pelikan Technixx, black, fine

Noodler Ahab Flex, black

Lamy Safari Aluminum (the first aluminum model they made IIRC)

Conklin Duragraph, amber, fine

FPR Himalaya, green ebonite, flex nib

Waterman Hemisphere, all stainless, fine

A few that have found their way to other homes.

Sheaffer Prelude

Sheaffer Award

Parker Sonnet

I suppose that will do for an intro post. I hope everyone is staying healthy.

Hello and welcome to this friendly corner of the universe from a fountain pen user in San Diego. How wonderful that you have your father's pen, such a nice connection to him and that time period.

Hello Dan,

Hi from the Milwaukee area! I assume you are aware of Anderson Pens in Appleton? I hardly have a reason to be in that area anymore, but when I am I make a stop.

Welcome to a bit more activity. Things have changed a bit over the years, but we are still here. If you are near a city that has a pen club you may want to explore joining it for when we can actually meet in person. You will likely discovery young people participating, a hopeful aspect of this hobby.

Hi Brian. Yes, I do know of them! I ordered my Conklin Symetrik from them on line a LONG time ago, and a few years back stopped in and bought the Noodler Ahab in person. I hope they're doing OK. I don't get to Milwaukee nearly as much as I'd like to, and this reminds me of one more reason to go (when it's OK to travel).

Your in good hands with bsenn and me. I have invited Brian to some local auctions that have vintage pens [ Parker's ] that happen in and around Rock Co. That's when I can't buy them all. :D

Yeah, Ken is good at tracking down the deals, and he shares when he can't handle it all. Hopefully that happens again sooner rather than later.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
