"endgame" Maki-E Pen - Pilot 100Th Anniversary Fuji & Meiji Maru Or Namiki Milky Way?

Hi all,

Per the title, I'm on the hunt for an "endgame" pen - which for me would be something with Maki-E.

I'm specifically trying to avoid anything screen printed, but apart from that, am just going by what calls to me aesthetically. I've had a look around and really liked 3 options:

Namiki Yukari Shooting Star

Namiki Yukari Milky Way

and

Namiki/Pilot 100th Anniversary Fuji & Meji Maru

I'm leaning heavily towards the 100th anniversary right now, since I'm an east asian history buff and it also feels like you are getting a lot more "bang per buck". The Milky Way is in the #2 spot.

What are your thoughts? Any others I should add into the mix?

The 100th anniversary is partially printed.

Hi,

Where did you hear this? Pilots materials say that it is done by togadashi taka maki-e which I understood to not involve screen printing.

I would go with The Milky Way, but I'm not a history buff. For a chance it might up up in value the 100 year pen might do better on later selling to a collector in ten or twenty years. But the others could do as well. No way to know on that front so go with what calls you the most.

At this price, buy what you like. Don't be moved by what others say, and don't ever be moved by the supposed "limited editions". I don't think the Fuji Maru is limited at all because I saw it everywhere when I was in Asia at the end of last year.

Its limited to 800 supposedly (with most copies staying in the asian market) but I havent let that factor into my decision.

I just really dig the artwork and theme. And it looks like better bang per buck to me as long as it isnt screen printed.

When I initially read the title, I thought this would be a Maki-E pen with an Avengers Endgame theme. I was wondering how that would work, and who would buy it

Personally, I would have to agree with Gerigo.

If you are going to buy a grail pen like this, worry only about personal preference. Whichever one you prefer should be the one you go for! Both are gorgeous pens.

Going against what I just said, I will share my opinion - I really like the flat-ended 100th anniversary. And Driften's point about reselling makes sense. If you decide to sell later, it might fetch a higher price in some time.

If you compare several 100th anniversary together. You will find that the lines are completely the same even to the smallest detail. It's not possible to do this by hand.

And if you've been to the Namiki workshop and look closely, you will know what I mean.

I agree with the advice to get your #1 choice. Otherwise, if you're anything like me, you'll keep thinking about it and end up buying it anyway! Especially since you seem to be into the history theme of the 100th anniversary pen--none of the other maki-e designs I've seen are based on an actual event (it's usually nature, culture, or literature).

My personal choice would be the Shooting Star because I think it's the prettiest~

The artist of the Milky Way, Mr.Kawaguchi retired from Pilot, I heard. So the pen may become a precious treasure.

Gee, I was going to sell mine because I find it a little small for my taste. But maybe I'll hang on to it. Besides, it has a cool Broad Stub nib and is the third-best looking pen I own.

Wow! I actually prefer the one on the right now that you show it. How would that one rank amongst your most beautiful pens? ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
