Am I A Parker Collector Yet?

So:

  • I received my fourth Parker 45 today.
  • I have my first 51 on the way from eBay, all the way from Canada.
  • I just put in a bid for a Vacumatic.
  • I have 3 Jotter BP pens (1990 Flighter, as well as two Jotters with 1998 codes that I bought NOS).
  • A few months ago, I bought twelve 5-packs of Quink Washable Blue carts in the original box. Dated from the 80s. And I use them.

My 45s:

  1. Flighter 14k (M) - this one looks to be from the 60's, as best I can tell.
  2. Red (EF)
  3. Grey (F)
  4. Teal (F)

(I have actually had five P45s, but I gave one away because it wrote super wet. It was a gold nib, and I kind of regret it now. I'll bet it would have rocked my seriously dry-writing vintage Skrip Blue Black, but I never bothered to try it.)

The Teal is the new one. I loaded it with Serenity Blue tonight, and it's super smooth for such a fine line. Good ol' Serenity Blue.

I admittedly don't know enough about Parkers yet, so I am probably more of an accumulator (a term I am stealing from an old post by Ruth). But I am working on it.

Yes. Two is fine - no more than the number of hands you possess.

You have more than 2 and at least 3 - a pen, a spare and a spare for the spare. The remainder is your collection.

Nah, 3 is one for Black, one for Blue, and one for Blue-Black. Then we can talk about spares and spares for spares. :D

There are collectors and there are accumulators.....LOL!! I only care about certain eras like the early 1940's "51's" and the 1930's vacumatic.

The more I read the more narrow my interests become. Congratulations on your pens. Enjoy!!.

Well, I keep adding $$ to my bid on this Vacumatic when I get outbidded. I am now almost $30 more than my original bid. :yikes:

And still not ended yet. Must. Get. Control.

Oh I did that a few years ago on the Bay of Evil on a Grey Shadow Wave Vac. Another bidder had asked about what appeared to be a crack in the cap. Seller said he wasn't seeing one. So I did up and won it and sure enough -- a crack about an inch long. Also missing the cap jewel, as it happened.... :( Didn't file a dispute, just figured I could get Ron Zorn to fix it -- not realizing what was going to be involved in doing the solvent weld. Or just how much it was going to cost.... He sent me to Rich Lott's table (this was at a pen show, and he couldn't do the work there) to see if I could pick up a replacement. I was dubious but got lucky.

But that cap has a chip right under the cap band. One of these days I will save up the money for Ron to make one working cap out of the two cracked one. At least I keep telling myself that....

OTOH, the last year I was able to go to DCSS (before they moved to the new site), I managed to get a 1937 red Shadow Wave Lockdown filler Vac for way less than I expected. I do now (after 4-1/2 years, need to do a little maintenance on it (like flush it out ; but also put a little thread sealant on the threads for the blind cap jewel -- before I actually DO lose the jewel and taste). But for over three years all I did was refill the pen with Waterman Mysterious Blue as needed. No flushing, no flossing, just refill the pen and write with it some more....

Here in SE WI near Parkerland I for one would say that I am a Parker Addict. I will not miss an auction that has Parkers listed in the advert.

Hello my name is Jotteraddict62 and I am a Parker addict. I hope this auction season will be as good as last year. I need a pen fix......

Anyone want to help count my pens?

I´d say you are on your way on being a collector.

These are my 45´s

Nice, colorful collection!

I especially like your Gerald Murphy sig. graphic, "Razor". I read a book about he and his wife's life, "Everybody Was So Young: a Lost Generation Love Story" by Amanda Vaill. They were the couple Fitzgerald's "Tender is the Night" was based upon.

:P I might consider it in a little while. Finances are going to force me to take a pause from acquisitions for a month or two. When the time comes, I will drop you a line.

I fear I may have some things in common with jotteraddict62. Age being the least of them.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Pink. I don't have PINK. I didn't even know Pink was an option.... :wallbash: (Or some of the other colors of 45s in that photo that I didn't know existed either, although I did manage to score a great one with a B nib at the Ohio Pen Show a couple of years ago).

I'd also really love to get my hands on one of the Harlequins, but every one I've ever seen for sale was for way more than I could justify spending that kind of money on; I mean, my first 45 I think I paid under $11 US for (antiques shop find in a box full of mostly brands I couldn't have ID'd if my life depended on it -- but I spotted tha arrow clip and thought "Okay, Parker is a name I know" even though I didn't know what the model was until I posted pix of it on FPN (it was my first semi-vintage pen and also my first pen with a 14K nib...).

ETA: Wait just a minute now.... Did someone just say "purple" and "Parker 45" in the same sentence? OMG -- WAAAANT! Must HAAAAVE!

(I'm doomed, aren't I.... :wallbash:)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
