Parker Penman Sapphire Vs Everyone Else

Recommended Posts

After having just paid out the nose for some Parker Penman Sapphire, I decided it might be fun to compare it to others and look for a substitute. I compared it to Private Reserve DC Supershow Blue, Monteverde Horizon Blue, Noodlers Liberty's Elysium, Monteverde DC Supershow Blue, and Diamine Blue Velvet. It came really close to all of those colors. I would say that the 2 frontrunners are Diamine Blue Velvet first and Noodlers Liberty's Elysium a distant second. The Diamine behaved the same in nearly every way. It went down just a little darker but had nearly the same sheen.... especially on Tomoe River paper. The LE dried close to the same color but didn't have any sheen and was maybe just a little lighter. So my own very non scientific conclusion is that Blue Velvet is the modern day equivalent and is much, MUCH easier on your wallet. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the comparison. FPN member DCWaites did a marvelous summary of PPS comparisons and formula for mixing faux PPS here https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/334213-p-p-s-my-journey/ Well worth a read!

Ever since it went out of production, Parker Penman Sapphire has been the ink many have tried to duplicate. Many have come close, but I have yet to see a perfect match.

Thanks!

Our memories make things more perfect than they actually were, as well the ink was reputed to dry up quickly (I couldn't vouch for that.)

I have a few bottles kicking around somewhere, probably have to put some water in the mix to get them going again.

I agree about the memory thing. "We look before and after, and pine for what is not...." Percy Shelley, from To A Skylark

The bagel I'm eating right now is better than the memories another person is blathering on and on about about their bagel in NYC 25 years ago, or whatever...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
