My beloved eponymous ink had its throne challeged by not one, but two contenders, one Polish and one Japanese. But the king has not lost its crown: while both KWZ and Sailor inks behave flawlessly and offer a superior writing experience, to the point of appealing to the writer's nose (KWZ smells like vanilla, and Sailor smells like... well Sailor ink), they couldn't best Diamine Eclipse, which on top of all that offers a discreet but noticeable golden sheen. His sidekick Vivaldi actually ups the sheen AND shading game a notch, but is noticeably lighter and cannot under any circumstance be mistaken for black, therefore limiting his viability somewhat.

Thanks for the comparisons - I have only Diamine Eclipse of the ones you showcase, but it's a favourite of mine. I've never noticed a sheen though! I think the nibs I usually use are too fine. I'll have to try it in a broader one.

Interesting comparison. I have two of these: Eclipse and Grey Plum, and like both of them. Don't have any of the Diamine music line inks, and was not familiar with Chushu.

Thank you for the comparison. I've tried Diamine Eclipse and liked it. I've started using and liking KWZ inks lately, and Grey Plum is appealing to me, so looks like it's going on the wishlist.

Lovely colours... You might want to add Sailor Shigure to the mix

Sailor Kobe Suma Purple is another one to try. Most of my inks are dark purple, but Suma Purple is my favorite.

Yes! I have a samle of Shigure that came in the same shipment with Chushu and I like it a lot, but it felt too blue to fit with these 4, or to replace one. Maybe I'll do a comparison just for it...

Interesting, I thought it would be too blackish.... In retrospect Diamine Purple Rain might fit the bill better, but then you wouldn't see the purple through all that sheen....

Thanks for the comparison. I got a bottle of Chushu a few years back thinking it would be a kind of purple, but it wasn't, it was just gray to my eyes.

Shigure is definitely darker than Chushu, but it's not only darker in value, it's also more saturated. I see it as more blue but looking at my swabs now... not so sure anymore. I don't have purple rain, but I do have Scribble Purple which looks similar, and maybe less sheeny so you can see what's beneath...

Yep Chushu is definitely unsaturated... damn I should have put Shigure in its place lol

There's always another ink, which will resemble or be closer to this or that :)

I nearly bought a bottle of Purple Rain on impulse, I'm glad I didn't. The sheen was overwhelming, and the purple just to blackish.....your selection looks quite elegant.... I might pull out my Scabiosa and ink something with it :)

I agree. Suma Purple is one of those mercurial inks that looks quite ordinary at first glance, but the smokey shading gives it hidden depths.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
