Transparency Of Parker 51 Pli-Glass Sacs

So I have a Parker 51 aerometric, and I would like to be able to still see the ink levels in my pen even a few years from now. I am aware that the pen will get tinted from the inks I use no matter what ink it is, but is it possible that it can stay semi-transparent without getting completely opaque if I use safe inks ie Parker, Waterman, Diamine, etc?

It’s going to stain some, but you can still see the ink if you put it up to a light. Turn it upside down(nib up) watch the ink move around. After you use the pen for a while, you will just know by the way it writes when it’s time to top off.

For keeping the sac as clear as possible, Regular cleaning helps. Choice of inks is critical. Some are easier to clean than others and some highly saturated inks are more suited to cartridge / converter pen. Waterman Serenity blue will wash out of your pen with plain water and not leave a trace.

I’m very fussy about what i put in my Areo P51’s. The plyglass sac is pretty tough, but, having played around with different inks, these days i only use Visconti blue, Aurora Blue Black, or J Herbin Bleu Des Profondeurs. The Herbin is a wet flowing ink, it cleans up easily and is particularly attractive to some of those ink stingy fine nibbed P51’s. Turns them into a different pen with a nice color saturated ink line. Right now i also use the Herbin in my P51 Vacs and am real happy with it.

Hope this helps. Get back if you have any other questions.

I have been fortunate to buy and use a few NOS 51s. I use only the regular inks from Quink, Waterman, Pelikan and Montblanc. The sacs do turn progressively opaque, I will post a pic later of one of the sacs if you are interested.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
