Hero 232 Iron Gall Blue Black

Hero's Iron Gall ink has quite a reputation here so I thought I would give it a shot.

It turns out that it is no longer on Amazon or ebay, but I did manage to find it on a site called ebuy7. I was a little reluctant to place an order, but the checkout was (seemingly) legitimately handed off to Paypal so I didn't have to risk my credit card details and if the ink never arrives I am confident I will be able to claw back the miniscule investment it cost for two bottles.

I'll update the thread if and when the bottles arrive.

If anyone has a more reliable, potentially reputable, source, please do share...

# edit. I found them on aliexpress eventually, but they are a lot more expensive, don't deliver to my part of the world, and that website is such a royal pain in the asset, I refuse to patronise it. :)

Give it four to six weeks before it qualifies as a "new source"... :P

Here's hoping, though!

After the discontinuation of the original MB BB, Hero 232 has been my daily goto ink for work. Behaves well, flows well (better than the old MB BB). A bargain at that price.

  • 1 month later...

I placed my order for (four bottles of) the ink, along with eight bottles of Hero #234, last week on AliExpress from one particular seller. (That, and ten bottles of Hero #202 from another seller on AliExpress, which I'm inclined to expect the order will never be shipped and eventually refunded.) The Hero #232 ink is more expensive than the other two, but at a per-bottle price less than US$3.50 (before tax and shipping), I thought I'd give that a shot.

Understandably, the order has not yet shipped, but given the seller isn't just charging peanuts for shipping bottled inks, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that it'll happen ... eventually.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

  • 2 weeks later...

So, it arrived yesterday. Actual transit time was onyl 17 days, which is not too bad for down here.

Packaging was more than adequate and both bottles arrived intact, with the boxes undamaged.

First impressions are that it goes on darker than KWZ IG Blue #3, but dries to the same colour. Similarly wet, for an iron gall.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
