In answer to questions regarding my swatch cards, I make these myself to a set size so that they fit snugly into my reference albums. Here's question for you. If I got packs of these produced, would you buy them?

Thanks for the suggestion! It sounds like a great idea. Do you think you could tell us how much would such packs appoximately cost when sent abroad? I don't have many different inks, but I like the idea of trying to make the swatch cards.

I certainly intend to take the online tutorial some time (it'll be only possible in summer), and if I do, I'll make sure to post my results here.

I've done it! The good paper made all the difference. Apologies for potato quality but my phone camera lens cover has gone through much abuse during its long life.

Left is done with Herbin Gris Nuage, right with Monteverde Rose Noir.

Excellent, Eclipse!

Here are mine. The photography is bad, the paintings worse. Clearly I need more practice! Luckily I have paper samplers and scraps.

First ones, Montblanc Black, St. Armonds paper, and Monteverde Moonstone on Bockingford paper:

Of course I forgot about the Platinum premium brand. That's a really beautiful classic pen.

I like the second one. It looks like big trees, trunks and all, reflected in a lake.

Thanks! I like the way Lamy Petrol separates into different colors. Maybe I'll try a few more. :)

Nick - I used your basic technique but got a bit carried away. I am no artist, but I love the colors in this ink!

Arches watercolor paper 160lb.

Sailor Manyo Nekoyanagi inks

I hope to play around with Sailor Manyo Haha soon using your technique. I will post upon completion.

You don’t need talent to create great fountain pen ink art. Just and open mind and patience! Lovely results.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
