Well, this is going to be interesting for me, but I am nervous... Nevertheless, here goes anyway, will try to make a short post…

ABOUT ME: Fountain pen collector. Small collection with about 100 pens, nothing special. Love writing, hate reading (my text). Love italic and stub nibs. Fred’s “The italic way to beautiful handwriting” is my therapy. Trying to grind nibs.

ABOUT THE PROBLEM: For a long time now, I am looking for some application to keep a pen inventory. Must be mobile phone app, not complicated, just to give me idea what to take for my next pen rotation and to keep track about my pens. Can’t find any.

ABOUT THE SOLUTION: Pick up my favorite computer keyboard, turn the computer on, sit down and make application.

ABOUT THE RESULTS: Well, here I need your help: any feedback would be greatly appreciated: criticism or positive. Any ideas for new app features?

You can find app here (iOS):

https://apps.apple.c...21?ign-mpt=uo=2

and here (Android):

https://play.google....m.MyFPens.Droid

There are three mandatory fields for pen data: manufacturer, model and filling system. Everything else is up to you.

Please note: This is the very first version, here is a lot of room for improvement: user interface, data about ink, repairs … But first: let us see reactions and does anybody need this app. As long as there are active users, I will develop new versions.

Disclaimer 1: I am the author of “My Fountain Pens” application.

Disclaimer 2: Application is free of charge, with ads.

Thank you very much for your time.

Kind regards, Anes

This is a really great app, thank you. I like to keep a record of what inks I put in pens and which ones don't play nice and i can do that easily in the notes section of the listing.. The only aspect I'd worry about is transfering the info to a new phone or new tablet. Is there a way to do that Or would I need to put the info in againg manually?

Sorry, I meant to mention that the non intrusive ads are good. Apps that have huge ads or those you have to sit through tend to get deleted from my tab.

Data backup & recovery is the very first line in my TO DO list

This is low volume application and I don't expect big money from ads. Why are they here? Because that's the easy way to see that in last 24 hours app has been started 25 times (19 x Android + 6 x iOS). Settings screen (yes, there is ad, too): 20 times. I need answer on question "does anybody use app?". If not, I'll develop app just for my iPhone.  Why is main screen ad huge? Because main screen is so empty (in this version) and looks ugly and poor.

Interesting app. If there was a paid version, I would consider it. As it is, the ads are too intrusive.

Good luck with the app!

Interesting idea, Anes, but I'm sufficiently old school that I don't use my phone for much except for calls and for Google Maps, and really useful stuff like the alarm function on the clock app, and the camera.  To the point that when I got the new one last summer I ended up deleting several apps, like YouTube and eBay (on the grounds that I was more likely to use those at home on my laptop.

I do have files on my laptop with information about my pens (such as repair costs), and also one as to what is currently in rotation and what ink I'm using -- but I also have several composition books in which I've dedicated about 4 pages for each pen to keep a record of what inks work well in it (or not, as the case may be -- stuff like "too wet", "clogs up too fast", etc.).

As for the ads?  Sorry, no.  Yes I understand that you're trying to sell the app, or at least get revenue back from your time and effort.  But I've had too many problems (including on here  :() with the ad scripts slowing page loads to a crawl, freezing them or crashing the site completely.  So I had to resort to using ad blocker software.  Especially since most of the ad content wasn't relevant to the site, and the ad companies' "analytics" were completely bogus, IMO -- including ads for weapons!  Just -- as far as I can tell -- because I live in western PA....  Apparently I was lucky in that I didn't get the porn/escort service ads.

And frankly, after having spent a good chunk of the afternoon fighting with FIOS (again) over how that well, now that they've signed a contract with the local NBC affiliate's parent company and we GET that channel and it's sub-channels again, it would be nice if I could actually set up to RECORD something instead of the curser in the Guide skipping OVER that show and only getting the shows before and after it....  (It went downhill from there....  It's now fixed, but I was unpleased when the FIRST person calling me said it would take 2-3 business days to get things back up and running (after the person on their chat line disappeared on me before I was able to reset the router box; the TV signal never wavered, but suddenly my WiFi went away.  Then, after it came back?  I couldn't actually ACCESS it even though I kept being told I was connected....   :gaah:

So, I'm sure your app is a lovely thing.  But I'm increasingly unconvinced that modern technology is "better".  The last update to Safari borked something in iPages (God only knows HOW) and apparently was ALSO not compatible with the latest version of iMovie (which was released AT THE SAME TIME...).

The issues with FIOS are now resolved -- for the moment.  But got escalated up to someone in "Executive [something]".  When he called back to make sure stuff was running, I was told that the call was being recorded, and I said "It had BETTER BE....  Because I'm REALLY NOT HAPPY with you people right about now...."

Hi Anes
Just downloaded the app, I like the idea it's a great piece of work.

My first thought would be an import/export option possibly as an xls so the database can be accessible using a desktop.

I'll take it out for a spin and add some thoughts.

Al

Ps. I'd happily give you a few dollars to switch off the adds, $5? Or trade for a bottle of ink ☺

Yep, I also installed the app and would second the proposition to rather pay instead of having ads. Xls or ther form of synching would be great, too.

Some folks might like to have a dedicated "Currently inked with" field instead of just putting it in the notes.

This would also enable you to sort your list of pens by those that are inked vs. those that aren't. I could see that being helpful for people with a large number of pens that they use in rotation.

Not speaking from experience -- I have less than 15 pens, so I could be wrong, lol.

and automagically feed that "Currently Inked With" data into a history list of "Previously Inked With"

maybe record user ratings too for each ink eg wet/dry, 1-5 stars etc

I've just downloaded it and put in a couple pens to see how it works... I like it!  I've kept my pens in a database with no pictures attached, and the idea of taking the pictures with my phone and saving them in the app really appeals to me.

I'll second the request for an import.  My database has about 100 entries, so it would save a lot of time if I could automate it.

It seems to be creating drop-down lists from my input, I think the "filling system" field has a drop down already.  That is helpful and maybe could be added for other fields.

When recording the date purchased, it would be nice to just key in a date instead of having to flip through the calendar.

The advertisements do not bother me, but I would buy an ad-free version if possible.  As an old programmer myself, I like to show my appreciation for the time and effort you put into this.

Good work!

I would be interested if you could make possible importing data from Jonro's database that I downloaded from FPN years ago and use to keep track of my pens.

Nice Idea.

I have not tried it yet so I'm speaking without much knowledge of what it can do, but can you search the app?

Can you find all pens with a B nib, for example? or pens according to other parameters, brand, filling system, etc?

Thanks!

ah, yes and data download as a database also... the toughest work is always data entry for the user...

This is a really great starting point. I've only had a few minuets to play around with it but so far I think it will be very useful.  I'll still use the excel spreadsheet that I made but will also use your app to have access to my pen list when not near the computer.   A couple of suggestions would be:

1. expand the details list to include nib manufacturer, pen material, pen weight, and currently inked with

-Having currently inked with shown in the main pen list would be good also.

2. expand the drop-down input list to more categories where appropriate

3. have a search and/or filter function.

4. be able to place a thumbnail pic of your pen in the main pen list (Not sure if this would work out well depending on the size of the device being used but it may be worth it to have the option)

5. Have a paid version or donate option to be able to remove ads (I find the ad on the home screen a bit tacky and I'd pay a few dollars to get rid of those ads)

Hope this feedback is useful to you

One last thing...  It would be great to develop an App to go along with this one to keep track of your inks.

Eric

First, I want to say that  I really appreciate your help in this project. Thank you very much for your comments!

About ads: I did not expect so many comments. Let's try to solve this problem:
1. Will try to filter intrusive ads: this is not a place to promote weapons, porn sites, ...
2. There will be option to support project
3. There will be option to remove ads for free - if you hate ads and hate supporting. This project is about pens, not ads.

I reserve the right to show pen related ads (like promo of fountain pens web store) at any time.

About backup:

Yes, what a great idea! Not only backup: backup and useful copy of data! Will try to implement.

About ink:

Great idea, must take a look at database, can't promise... I hate data entry....

Interesting.  I would be interested if there were no ads.  I just don't do ads....at all.

Thanks anyway and the very best of British luck to you with this fine project

I keep a simple list in a Word doc on my iPad of which inks are in which pens. Somewhat cumbersome; I have to remember to update the list every time and change inks in pens which happens frequently. So, for me, the best feature would be a dedicated field titled something like “currently inked with”. If I could do this on my phone that would be more convenient for me.

I am am gong to download the app and try it out. I’d be will to pay a small fee to eliminate ads - $2.99? - if I find it useful.

I suppose you are using mySQL as the backend database? Shouldn't be too difficult to export/inport data. Persoally, I'd do it as CSV or TAB files, because these are more portable than XLS, and for Excel users, it would most likely make no difference. But, obviously, it is your app and entirely up to you.

In any case, a big thank you for offering such a nice tool, it promises to be what many people has been (consciously or not) wishing to have for a very long time.
