Great question ... fun to answer and see other people's responses.

Today, so far, I wrote with my Wahl Eversharp Decoband Gatsby (black), Scribo Feel Fine Flex (blue-black), and Montegrappa Monte Grappa flex (yellow celluloid).

I keep about six pens on my bed-stand to write in a journal and use each one for awhile daily. I'll switch them out about once a week for a different six, which is a good way of making sure the collection gets regular attention. I usually like to have red, green, blue, and black inks available in the batch. Right now those six pens are my Wahl Eversharp Vintage Flex (green, black, and tan swirls), Montblanc Rudyard Kipling EF (grey -- I'll never understand how Montblanc can say it's some variation of the green that was the color of the first edition of Kipling's Jungle Book, which really is a green), Conway-Stewart Flex (red), and three Auroras -- Internaztioale, Cento Verdi, and Giove.

A good holiday weekend to all!

Got a new pen for a very reasonable price, but the grip is too slippery though.

Yes, the chrome section on the Lamy Studio seems to be a polarizing thing. I like the weight of the pen, and the smooth section doesnt bother me, but I can see how it would make some folks crazy.

Three inked this morning:

  • Shaeffer Prelude (F) - Skrip Blue cartridge
  • Shaeffer Cartridge Pen (M), ca 1960s - Skrip Green cartridge
  • Platinum Preppy (F) - Quink Washable Blue, eyedroppered

My $5 Preppy is more pleasurable to use than my $40 Prelude. Both are Fine nibs and nice enough to use. But the Prelude is a slightly-scratchy XF, despite the "F" label. And the Preppy smoothly writes a thick fine line. (Plus, it's fun watching the eyedroppered ink slosh around, and the section is a little bigger for gripping.)

There's no doubt in my mind which pen will last longer and would be more solid when thrown in a jeans pocket. But I sure like using the Preppy. :D
The Shaeffer, I am only guessing is a 60s era. It's green plastic with a metal cap. The blister pack had "50th Anniversary" on it, which I believe would be 1963.This pen is short, thin, and weightless -- it can't even fit the modern Shaeffer converter, but the cart fit just fine. And it's an absolute joy to use. The Medium nib just glides over the page, and the green ink is lovely.

I would like to try a calligraphy nib as well! But first I have to get my 149 fixed first; the section cracked, and is a bit leaky at the moment.

What's the ink you're using? Looks like the type of sepia/brown that is right up my alley. Plus it appears to have a bit of the edge shading crispness that some people refer to as "halo-ing", so that might an extra bonus for me (not that I NEED any more ink, of course ; just keeping a list for future reference, you understand... ;)).

It's Kyo-iro no 01 - Gion's Cobblestones. Very nice ink, but was to dry for this pen - it started railroading.

"not that I NEED any more ink, of course ; just keeping a list for future reference," - hehe, I keep saying that all the time. 115 bottles and counting.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
