New Pens From Custom Cast Alumilite

Recommended Posts

I finally bit the bullet and bought a bunch of equipment to do my own casting. The following 2 pens are my first results. One pen you may be able to see I was trying to create fire :) .... with a mixed result. My objective was to come up with a deep black colored pen that looked like it had flames mixed in with it. You guys be the judge. The second pen was made with the intent of creating something in a ama iro-ish color (my favorite pilot ink), but with a little shimmer mixed in. I suppose I could do a little better, but I do think the color is pretty close. Both pens are available and looking for a new home.

They can be found at www.jandjwooddesigns.net

I would love to hear what everyone thinks. I also do take custom orders. Send me a message at jj.9ball@hotmail.com and be sure to put "pen inquiry" in the subject line and we can talk more about a special order. I have NO current wait list (I should probably advertise more). I can now do ANY color combination you can imagine. You can even send a picture and I can do my best to match colors to whatever you want your "theme" pen to be. Thanks for looking.

Nice! I wasn’t expecting the Fire one to be as nice as it is after reading your description, but I think it works well.

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

Very nice! I like both, but truthfully, I am a blue kind of person.

Both are nice. Are you making your own blanks? Do you also purchase blanks from elsewhere? Curious to know how much you are charging for these pens.

Thx for sharing

Thanks. I am in the same boat. About 2/3 of my personal collection of pens are blue and easily over half my ink is blue. Blue is the best.

Thanks a bunch. I do no make my own blanks including the 2 listed above. I am also working on a Tibaldi Impero imitation that will hopefull be pretty cool. My pens range in price from around $150 to $200 for steel nib and $300 to $500 if you want a gold nib and/or complicated filling system.

How durable do you find alumilite?

Seems very strong to me, have yet to hear of a pen I have made that has cracked. Every now and then the buffing wheel grabs a piece and throws it to the floor of the workshop, but it barely gets a scratch.

Its really durable once you are done making the pen. I have had it split before when I was drilling out a pen interior. It really hates heat and I have had pieces actually blow up. Once the pen is made it is just as strong as many of the other materials pens are made from. Just don't drive your car over it trying to prove me wrong. :D

Nicely done. May I suggest a gold tone nib and furniture for the red/black model.

Thanks for the feedback. I had considered that too. The problem I seem to have is that gold is less marketable than Chrome/ Rhodium/ Silver. I do agree that anytime a pen has reds and oranges in it gold seems to look "right".

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
