What Is Your Favorite Ink?

This is a "rabbit-hole" indeed!

I have many favorites - too many to name just one.

I have over 50 different ink colors - all of which I like and work well for me.

Out of the 50, I zeroed in on my favorite 20, and now out of the 20, here are my top 6 in no particular order (because I could not put them in any order):

DeAtramentis Pearl Violet

Montblanc Swan Illusion

Montblanc Unicef Blue

Pilot Iroshizuku Ajisai

Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuyu-kusa

Stipula Calamo Fading Grey

Runners up are:

Waterman Serenity Blue

Waterman Inspired Blue

Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-Peki

DeAtramentis Emerald Green

Callifolio Bleu Atlantique

Montblanc Swan Illusion

Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuyu-kusa

I'm fully with you on the two inks above.

Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuyu-kusa is one of only a few inks which are represented on my writing desk by three bottles.

Many of the suggestions are past or will be future favorites. This means there is an upside and a downside to this thread depending on the current state of one's addiction. For me, black ink rocks ( yes-I do need an intervention).

I am steadily acquiring inks. The amount of the flow out the different nibs seems to change the darkness of some of the inks. Currently, I have five inks for every fountain pen I own, but I still only write with one hand at at a time. This is quite the diliemma! A few inks rise to the level of favorites:

Blue-Black, Montblanc JFK

Red, Diamine Oxblood

Purple, J. Herbin Scented Violet

Brown, P.W. Akkerman SBRE

Orange, Diamine Autumn Oak

Green, Montblanc Emerald Green

Thank you for posting your list.

I did a double-take when I read J. Herbin Scented Violet.

Why?

Because I'd looked at a bottle of it two days ago, considering whether or not to bring it back to my writing desk.

After reading your recommendation above, next time I visit that fountain pen and ink store, I may likely acquire a bottle.

Right now?

R&K Alt-Goldgrun (olive)
Sailor Rikyu-cha (greenish brownblack)

Diamine Ancient Copper (reddish brown)

Birmingham Pens Fred Rogers Cardigan Red (red with an orange cast)
Sailor Tokiwa-Matsu (dark graygreen)
Robert Oster Dragon's Night (dark purply blue)

What I don't seem to ever like are primary colors: bright monotone blue, green, purple, red, orange. Or black. I gravitate toward colors with subtlety, depth, mystery -- colors which have seen a thing or two and are sadder but wiser.

Deep and complex brown colour, will clean your pen, wet and lubricating. What's not to like?

Oh yes! Moreover it is lightfast and somewhat water resistant.

Seeking a Parker Duofold Centennial cap top medallion/cover/decal.
My Mosaic Black Centennial MK2 lost it (used to have silver color decal).

Preferably MK2. MK3 or MK1 is also OK as long as it fits.
Preferably EU.

After filling up a brand new pen today, a Sailor Pro-Gear Slim "Fire", I was reminded of an ink that I should have been included in my earlier post on this thread.

After more than a year's absence, it's the Rohrer & Klingner Eisen-Gallus Schreibtinte, "Scabiosa", an ink that was for a long time my most favourite.

I like vibrant ink. And I've been a purple ink gal long before I started using fountain pens. So, I'd have to say that my current all-time favorite ink is Noodler's North African Violet.

When I first started using fountain pens, I bought a bunch of samples. I narrowed down my favorite in six different hues and a bought a bottle of each. They are, as follows:

Black: Noodler's Black (boring. I rarely use this ink)

Blue: Noodler's Midway Blue (Really like it but will likely buy Noodler's turquoise next time I need blue)

Red: Diamine Syrah (a nice blood red. Some day I want to compare it to Diamine Oxblood)

Green: Private Reserve Spearmint (a vibrant, cheery green)

Purple: Noodler's North African Violet (favorite!)

Pink: J. Herbin Rose Tendress. (Nice hot pink)

It's funny -- I really like North African Violet (although I haven't used it in a while). But I couldn't stand Rose Tendresse. It had this sort of neon undertone that just grated on my nerves. Thought I'd really like the color, but didn't.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
